Unique bicycle navigation was created in the Agent Technology Centre FEE CTU

A tool supporting city cycling called ‘Cycleplanner’ was invented by the experts from Agent Technology Centre of Faculty of Electrical Engineering CTU in cooperation with the students of Open Informatics programme.  This app comprises from intelligent navigation system and data analysis and it enables journey planning around 25 Czech cities and Bratislava. The value added for the user is the possibility to choose speed and difficulty of the route.

The cycleplanner is a smart software advising cyclists on which route is the best for them and it provides valuable information to the cities on cyclist’s behaviour in the urban area and on the best way to improve the transport. Its test release took place in May 2015 in cooperation with o.s. Auto*Mat and with a support of City of Prague Municipality. At the moment, the app was installed into smartphones by more than 1,000 users who recorded 2,000 rides in 17 cities in total length of 20,000 km. In addition, the users used the app to plan more than 1,700 routes.

The program has both a web version and mobile app for Android (iPhone version is planned). After inserting the beginning and the end of the journey the system will offer routes according to several profiles (fast, calm, flat, and balanced). Furthermore, the mobile app provides turn-by-turn navigation so it is capable of guiding the user safely around the city.

The Agent Technology Centre is currently working on the new generation of the ‘Cycleplanner’. It will use more advanced algorithms, work on the basis of already chosen routes, and it will bring a wide range of other improvements. The inventors plan to connect the cycling with the public transport so the cyclists can combine cycling with, for example, taking a metro. The app will provide essential data as well to the city institutions in order to help them target their actions supporting the city cycling better.
