The wITches students from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering have taught magic in electrical engineering for nearly a thousand children
A volunteer group of students of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague teaches kids the basics of IT and electrical engineering. Workshops for children from 10 years to 15 years are free of charge since 2016. They currently offer five different topics - building and programming robots from LEGO MINDSTROMS, basics of programming in SCRATCH environment, basics of electrical circuits with BOFFIN, basics of programming and algorithms with OZOBOT robots and fundamentals of electrical engineering with programmable microcomputer MICRO: BIT. They arrange excursions to IT and technology companies for the participants, so that children get to know how everything looks like in practice. Students create and provide the program and tools themselves, as well as web application development, PR graphics, or management.

R. Hadimani: Magnetic Neuromodulation: A Non-Invasive and Safe Treatment for Brain Disorders [lecture recording]
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) can tune brain functions non-invasively, safely and effectively without the need for surgery or drugs. Thus it can enable treatment of several debilitating neurological and psychiatric disorders and enhancement of cognitive capabilities. TMS has gained significant attention as a treatment for depression and is used for investigating therapeutic effects on several brain disorders at human level but its mechanism is poorly understood. We have designed and fabricated a novel focal stimulation coil that can stimulate only a local region of primary motor cortex. In collaboration with Dr. Baron, a neurologist at VCU, we are working to experimentally verify the results from coil design in rats. We have also designed and fabricated an anatomically accurate human brain phantom that can be used to test feasibility and safety of several TMS protocols. The current research is working to establish accurate mechanism underlying TMS by investigating the electric firing patterns in the deeper regions of the brain induced by cortical stimulation. The role of individual nuclei in effecting other nuclei of the motor circuitry will be established. This will enable future development of effective TMS protocols for diagnosis and treatment of several neurological and psychiatric disorders.

Our experts have warned against the potential error of some GPS receivers
The so-called rollover, or the GPS Week number overflow, will occur on the night of 6 to 7 April. Experts compare this situation to the Y2K problem of the year 2000. The US Homeland Security Office, the Cyber Security Center, and even the ICAO have already issued warnings. Scientists at the Department of Radioelectronics at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, have already turned to the first Czech subjects with questions about testing and verification of their facilities. It is they who have experience with the development of the so-called Navigation, have developed several own GPS receivers, as well as the Russian GLONASS system, European Galileo and others. These people have been active in the Czech, European and international field of satellite and radio navigation for more than 40 years. And so thanks to its equipment and experience, several receivers have been tested for this situation and the public calmed down.

We are setting up a new research center on drive by wire
A new Smart Driving Solutions research center has been created at the Department of Control Engineering. A team of 13 scientists led by Ing. Tomáš Haniš, Ph.D., aims to change the paradigm and to prepare the ground for the new technology of active dynamic driving, which has long been used in aviation industry. Experts from the department have been focusing on a long-term drive-by-wire concept, in which the driver does not control the wheels or car engine directly, but through an electronic control unit that has full control over the chassis. It is a technological revolution already underway by the aviation industry (so-called fly by wire systems are common in transport aircraft and fighters), but the automotive industry has not yet done so because of the conservative approach of the carmakers. Ing. Tomáš Haniš, Ph.D., is a researcher and developer who is coming to CTU with experience from Porsche Engineering Services and Rolls-Royce (aerospace division).
