We cooperate on ideathon dedicated to the actual topic of cognitive warfare technologies
To what extent can the power of the human mind be manipulated with modern technologies? Software Testing IntelLigent Lab (STILL) from the Dept. of Computer Science cooperates on ideathon “Hack the Mind. Hack the Brain. Help Us Understand”, organized by DefSec Innovation Hub in collaboration with NATO, Czech Armed Forces and other partners. The event focuses on the actual topic of cognitive warfare and use of modern technologies in this field. Participation in the ideathon is open to everyone interested who wants to share their knowledge, ideas and solutions in this area.

The student team presented the first self-driving electrical formula in the Czech Republic at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering
Two new student formulas were revealed on 4 September after technical presentations. Despite the cancellation of all international Formula Student races, the eForce FEE Prague Formula team did not slow down in development and presented the invited guests with a complete novelty in addition to the optimized electric formula model - a self-driving formula that the team was the first to construct in the Czech Republic. Both formulas have won several awards this summer in online alternatives to traditional international races.

Researchers from the FEE have developed filtration material that can be sterilized by electric current and reused to protect against the new coronavirus and other diseases
The team of doc. Lukáš Vojtěch and Ing. Marek Neruda from the Department of Telecommunication Engineering, FEE has long been engaged in research and development of electrically conductive textile materials. In a record time of 3 months, the team designed and tested a prototype of a textile composite material that can be sterilized by electric current. The prototype composite consists of carbon fabrics, nanotextiles and an electrode system. The filtration concept is registered for patent protection and the team is currently looking for partners for introduction into production.

The FreMEn contra COVID project from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering received a Special Award at the Hack the Crisis virtual hackathon
In response to the coronavirus crisis, the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic, together with the CzechInvest agency, organized a virtual hackathon titled Hack the Crisis with the aim of selecting and supporting exceptional projects that contributed to the fight against the pandemic. Over the last two months of the hackathon, 206 projects registered, from which the jury selected the best 15. On June 22, 2020, their representatives competed for the awards provided by the partner company Hyundai at the final evening in the Prague coworking space WeWork. With the participation of Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, Minister of Industry and Trade Karel Havlíček and Government Commissioner for IT Vladimír Dzurilla, eight finalists were awarded after the presentations and divided among themselves the amount of 10 million CZK for implementation and further development of the project.

The Czech Technical University in Prague significantly improved in the evaluation of the prestigious QS World University Rankings for the year 2021. It ranked 432nd in the overall ranking of 1604 universities, a significant shift of 66 places compared to the 2020 ranking.

Social Worker on Mobile - a new application from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering that can help in an unfavorable life situation
Karel Zavadil, a student of the bachelor's program in Software Engineering and Technology, at Faculty of Electrical Engineering, developed a unique application Social Worker on Mobile, which aims to provide individuals in an unfavorable social situation with relevant professional assistance by filling out a simple questionnaire. The application was developed by the student Karel Zavadil himself within his diploma work, supervised by Ing. Martin Komárek from the Department of Computers. Its use is very intuitive. The application offers the user a number of simple questions and, based on the chosen answers, evaluates the situation and suggests further action, including contacts to specific workplaces in the area as social service providers, authorities and non-profit organizations.

The development of clean energy will bring more than 300 billion crowns of investments, according to a study in which the Faculty of Electrical Engineering participates
A total of 327.5 billion crowns will come from investments to achieve the goal of developing renewable resources, which was set by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic. The amount was calculated by experts from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University and the Chamber of Renewable Energy Sources. According to a study by the Chamber, approximately 70 billion crowns of public support will be needed to trigger these investments. The Modernization Fund will be key, the conditions of which are currently being finalized by the Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic.

A student from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering designed a test tube opener manufactured on a 3D printer. It is already used by seven Czech laboratories and can be printed free of charge by anyone
At the beginning of April, the doctor RNDr. Lenka Richterové, Ph.D. contacted a group of CTU researchers who automate Covid-19 testing using pipetting robots in the Na Bulovce Hospital, where she works. Researchers and students of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FEE) and the Czech Institute of Informatics, Robotics and Cybernetics (CIIRC) were asked whether they could design a tool to facilitate the opening of test tubes. The current procedure of manual opening is very impractical and ultimately dangerous. It requires inserting a finger into the recess of the lid, turning it and then unfolding it. According to Richterová, this method followed by the lab technicians causes calluses and painful blisters that burst. In addition, tilting the cap to the side causes bubbles to contaminate the outside of the tube and laboratory gloves. And using more layers of gloves would make it impossible to hold the tube and cap firmly.

Scientists from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering develop drones, which autonomously search for radiation
Experts from the group of Multirobotic Systems of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University (MRS) have joined forces with the company ADVACAM, with which they are working on the development of a drone independently searching for radiation. Compared to current systems, the drone can use an advantageous combination of small size and flexibility, so the device can be used in difficult-to-access terrain. The drones will be equipped with state-of-the-art detection technology that allows you to find the radiation source up to 100 times more efficiently than is possible today, at an incomparably lower acquisition cost. The detectors will be provided by ADVACAM, a developer of state-of-the-art imaging technology, supplied by, for example, NASA. The facility will serve the police, the army, rescue services and nuclear power plants. The prototype should be ready this autumn. The product should enter international markets in about a year and a half.

Drive by wire concept (Smart Driving Solutions)
The concept of drive by wire solution is introduced, showing analogy with aerospace flight by wire functionality and pointing out the possible technology transfere. The drive by wire approach augments human driver capabilities, guaranties safety and reliability of operation. Furthermore such service is missing piece in development proces from human driven vehicle to autonomous vehicle.

Li-Fi in the University hospital Motol was tested by colleagues from the dept. of electromagnetic field
The researchers from the Wireless and Fibre Optics Group, Petr Chvojka and Stanislav Zvanovec, cooperated with colleagues from the Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz Institute on the testing of a Li-Fi system in an operating room in Motol University Hospital. The results were presented at the conference OFC 2020, San Diego, USA. Also, a short interview about the experiment was published in the IEEE Spectrum magazine.

Algorithm by the scientists from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering CTU in Prague will help automate coronavirus testing at the Motol University Hospital
Scientists and students from the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Electrical Engineering CTU (FEE CTU) in cooperation with the Faculty of Science, Charles University and the Czech Institute of Informatics, Robotics and Cybernetics (CIIRC) are working on automation of COVID-19 sample testing for the Motol University Hospital. The algorithm currently being developer is designed to allow hospital pipetting robots to handle samples quickly and safely, avoiding cross-contamination. The involvement of the Opentrons and Beckman Biomek 3000 robots will make it possible to use test kits newly developed at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry AS CR (IOCB AS CR) and can have a major impact on the testing process. If successful, it will replace the work of the laboratory technicians, who will be given room to carry out other activities related to fighting the coronavirus. New software could be deployed during Easter.

Denis Rozumnyi from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering won the Werner von Siemens Prize
The 22nd annual Werner von Siemens Prize was awarded on 5 March. Czech branch of Siemens appreciates the work and projects in the field of technical and natural sciences in four categories: the most important result of basic research, the best diploma thesis, the best dissertation and the best pedagogue. Together with students, their work leaders also receive rewards. This year, special awards were given for overcoming obstacles in study, for the excellent quality of female scientific work and for the graduation work on Industry 4.0.

Roboticists from the FEE won at the DARPA Subterranean Challenge Urban Circuit
In the second half of February 2020, ten robotic teams gathered at the nearly-built but unfinished nuclear power plant near Elma, Washington. The robots were sent into the underground maze of the huge concrete-steel in a quest to find and locate predetermined 20 artifacts. Researchers, graduate and undergraduate students of Departments of Cybernetics and Computer Science paired with NORLAB, University Laval in team CTU-CRAS-NORLAB, and won the competition among the self-funded teams and scored 3rd overall, surpassing three out of five teams which were directly funded by DARPA.

Our autonomous robots in Abu Dhabi have once again proved to be the world leaders
On February 23-25, the Khalifa University hosted the Mohamed Bin Zayed International Robotics Challenge (MBZIRC) in Abu Dhabi. Team of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering Czech Technical University in Prague (FEE CTU) cooperating at the competition with colleagues from universities in Pennsylvania and New York won first place for building walls with drones, second for destroying defined targets (balloons) and the most valuable golden medal for winning the Grand Challenge.

We celebrated 50 years since the founding of computer graphics in the Czech Republic
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of computer graphics in the Czech Republic, a commemorative seminary took place in the building of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering on Thursday, 20 February. The event consisted of presentations of founders and witnesses of computer graphics from various workplaces in the Czech Republic. Photographs of historical equipment and projects were not the only things presented during the seminary, but also unique memories of the beginnings of computer graphics in the Czech Republic.

Drones of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering will be presented in Abu Dhabi in a week
The Khalifa University hosts the Mohamed Bin Zayed International Robotics Challenge (MBZIRC) in Abu Dhabi from 23-25 February. A team led by scientists from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague (FEL) working with researchers from the universities of Pennsylvania and New York has made it to the finals and to defend the 2017 victory, has been testing drones in desert conditions for more than a month.

An infection that is spreading from the city of Wuhan, China. This influenza-like infection can be highly dangerous, especially for people with a weakened organism. Coronavirus is transmitted from person-to-person after close contact. It is a so-called contageous infection. Illness does not appear immediately, but only after a period of 7 – 14 days. After arrival from a high-risk area, use protection mask, 7 days of isolation are recommended, within which time any signs of a respiratory illness should appear, i.e. shortness of breath, coughing, and high temperature.

CTU-CRAS team from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering will defend their success in the DARPA Subterranean Challenge robotic competition
Last August, the CTU-CRAS team from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering was able to win among the non-sponsored teams in the DARPA Subterranean Challenge Tunnel Circuit and took 3rd place in the overall scoring. In the upcoming competition, which will take place in Washington (USA) on 18-27 February, the CTU-CRAS experts and their robots will be tackling with multi-storey terrain that includes the challenge of moving between floors on very steep and narrow stairs, possible but very difficult flythrough of vertical shafts, or new objects to detect, including the location of dangerous CO2 leakage source .

SYNTH CHALLENGE 2019 – Announcement of competition results
On January 8th, 2020, the winners of the SYNTH CHALLENGE 2019 competition, which focuses on the synthesis of sounds and musical instruments in the MATLAB programming environment, were announced. This year students could choose between a synthesis of “Three Nuts for Cinderella” by Karel Svoboda and “Waterloo” by ABBA. In the second task, students created arbitrary realizations using various sound synthesis techniques. Professors from universities in Germany, Finland, and the USA participated in the evaluation of the competition. Examples of the most successful sound syntheses were played during the ceremony: “Autumn Hunting” by Jan Melechovský (Honorable Mention), “Drum Kit” by student Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Matěj Mžourek (“Honorable Mention”), “Waterloo” by Martin Novotný (3rd prize), “Three Nuts for Cinderella” by Daniel Šafář (2nd prize) and “Once in the West” by Jan Vimr (1st prize). The diploma and prizes were awarded to students by FEL Vice-Dean Jiří Jakovenko, Chairman of the Czech Acoustic Society Prof. Jiříček and for HUMUSOFT Dr. Mudrová and Ing. Studnička. At the end of the ceremony, SETOPLETE group and FEE professors played both songs live.

The drones of the FEE are flying to Abu Dhabi to defend their victory, they will compete for prizes worth more than CZK 50 million
A team led by scientists from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, coworking with researchers from the universities of Pennsylvania and New York, made it to the finals of all three sub-disciplines of the prestigious Mohamed Bin Zayed International Robotics Challenge (MBZIRC), organized by Khalifa University, that takes place in Abu Dhabi on 25 February. In addition, FEE representatives advanced to the finals of the main competition from the first place out of 200 registered teams. All partial disciplines - autonomous capture of flying drone, robotic wall construction and fire fighting in high-rise buildings will be solved simultaneously in the final round, showing the audience a glimpse of the robotic cities of the future.
