Anotation:

The purpose of these lectures is to familiarize doctoral students with the issues of ultrasonic waves needed for the design of a wide range of ultrasonic devices and to discuss in detail the parts that the doctoral student could use in his work. The subject of the offer is a range of classic and recently developed findings from research.

Study targets:

To get an overview of ultrasound physics.

Content:

Ultrasonic generators, receivers and propagation. Piezoelectric relations. Dynamics of solids. Attenuation of ultrasonic waves. Acousto-optics. Methods and instruments for ultrasonic measurement, testing and imagining. Sensors and systems for industrial process control. Application of surface acoustic waves. Medical ultrasonic diagnostics and therapy. High energy ultrasound, cavitation.

Course outlines:

1. Ultrasound waves in non-piezoelectric materials.
2. Piezoelectric materials.
3. Effect of piezoelectric coupling on wave propagation.
4. Piezoelectric transducers.
5. Basic theory for ultrasonic waves, attenuation.
6. Equivalent circuits of piezoelectric transducers.
7. Phonon-phonon/electron interaction.
8. Acousto-optics.
9. Ultrasonic testing and imaging methods.
10. Ultrasonic industrial process control sensors and systems.
11. Surface acoustic wave application.
12. Application of ultrasound in signal processing.
13. Medical ultrasonic diagnostics.
