Energy Olympics 2025: Secondary school students will tackle the future of energy

The largest secondary school competition in the field of energy, the Energy Olympics, is entering its eighth year this year. The school round will take place on Friday, 17 October 2025, across the Czechia and will culminate in a two-day national final on 6–7 November 2025 at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague.

The Olympiad gives secondary school students a unique opportunity to try their hand at solving real-world problems in the energy sector – from renewable sources and smart grids to proposals for future systems. "The Energy Olympiad is a great example of how young people can get involved in current energy challenges and start working on solutions while still in secondary school," says Adéla Holasová, founder of the Energy Olympiad competition.

The school round takes place online in the form of a test, from which the best 25 teams advance to the finals in Prague. There, teams of three compete in solving a technical assignment and defend their ideas before a jury composed of experts from leading energy companies and academics.

"The Energy Olympics is a great opportunity to attract talented secondary school students to the energy sector. This field is undergoing a fundamental transformation and needs young blood, new ideas and the courage to seek innovative solutions. We are delighted to welcome the final of the competition to our faculty and to be able to support the future generation of experts who will shape the energy sector in the Czech Republic and Europe," says Prof. Petr Páta, Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at CTU.

The Olympiad gives students the opportunity to discover who they really are and what they are capable of

"The Energy Olympiad is not just about winning. It's about innovation, collaboration and energy. You'll find that you can do much more than you thought," says Tomáš Čermák, a finalist from 2023 who now works on projects with a global reach. This year, for example, he and Anna Podmanická won the prestigious Earth Prize for a device that can clean water of harmful chemicals.

Opportunities for winners

In addition to CZK 50,000 and the opportunity to enrol in selected technical faculties (including FEL ČVUT) without entrance exams, the winners will gain valuable experience and contacts that will open doors to the world of innovation and technology.

Some projects even have a sequel – for example, after the competition, the winning team consisting of Stanislav Sadílek, Ondřej Dolejš and Jakub Pelc, in cooperation with experts from Energetická gramotnost (Energy Literacy) and the general partner of the competition, ČEPS, completed an educational online game called Energo Play, which introduces the public to the functioning of the energy sector and the principles of energy system management.

The Energy Olympics were established eight years ago in cooperation with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague. The general partner of the project is ČEPS.
