The Institute of Intermedia at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague, in cooperation with the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University, and the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design, announces the fourth annual student project competition for the implementation of a creative intermedia project.
"Within the Intermedia Laboratory, students have the unique opportunity to work for up to 80 hours in the fully equipped premises of the Institute of Intermedia, with complete technical and technological support for their projects, valuable consultations from experts in the development and use of interactive, multimedia and VR applications, including support in the area of further project direction and grant literacy, while the inter-faculty nature of the projects brings exceptionally enriching cooperation," says Dagmar Kantorková from the Institute of Intermedia.
Students can apply with one-year projects that emphasize interdisciplinary collaboration and will be implemented by a team composed of various disciplines and schools. The competition is open to projects in the fields of theater, music, dance, film, new media, applied arts, and architecture that are intermedia in nature, connecting art and technology. Graduation projects from bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs are also eligible for the competition. More information, including how to apply for the competition and the conditions for project implementation, can be found on the Institute of Intermedia website.
Theater performance and site-specific sound installation
Last year's competition was won by a project by FAMU student Vít Jeřábek and DAMU student Anna Havelková entitled Rhythms / Site-Specific Sound Installation, which opened on January 15, 2026, at the Academy of Performing Arts Gallery in Prague. The authors of the installation were inspired by the cyclical rhythm of nature, the flowing rhythm of time, and the changing rhythm of each individual. According to them, the installation opens up "a safe space for slowing down and changing perspective at a time when natural rhythms seem to be increasingly hidden."
In 2025, two other projects were supported. The first is Magdalena Fialová's performance Pleasure Practice. The second is the 90-minute performance Poslední smíření (The Last Reconciliation), which premiered on May 12, 2025, at the Alfred ve dvoře Theater. In it, the IPUP collective attempts to discover a world that is not what it seems at first glance—a world full of reconciliation.
In 2024, the winning project was one in which students from DAMU and FAMU prepared a performance for the Disk Theater entitled Zadním vchodem na Hrad (Through the Back Entrance to the Castle). The author duo Antonie Rašilová and Roman Poliak were inspired by journalist Zdislava Pokorná's book Zemanovo finále (Zeman's Finale). In it, she describes how in 2022 she regularly visited the publicly accessible areas of Prague Castle and investigated who was visiting the Office of the President of the Czech Republic. The performance premiered in December 2024.
The first year of the competition was won by a team of students from DAMU and FEL, who prepared a 60-minute production called Partyzánka. It was based on an original text written from childhood experiences in a military training area, where the fourth generation now lives. They raise their children here, who play at being the partisans who were once present in the forest. The performance premiered in October 2023 at the Disk Theater.
