The future of Strahov is in the hands of students. Share your experiences and requirements for student housing

For students

The student dormitories in Strahov were built in the mid-1960s. According to students and the management of the Czech Technical University, they are in need of renovation. What are the requirements of Strahov residents and other students for modern dormitories in the 21st century? Come and share your experiences on Thursday, February 26, starting at 10:00 a.m.

Students have been calling for improvements to student housing conditions at the Strahov dormitories for quite some time. The condition of the dormitories is also a recurring topic in student elections to the CTU Academic Senate. Now, all students have the opportunity to share their positive and negative experiences in a participatory workshop on the topic of Strahov.

It will take place with the participation of CTU Rector Prof. Michal Pěchouček on Thursday, February 26, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the CTU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, in lecture hall 366. It will be moderated by Dr. Lenka Burgerová, Vice-Rector for Campuses and Building Infrastructure. It is important for the new university management to find out from students what their requirements are for future dormitories and to estimate what students will need in 10 years' time. The academic and professional public is also welcome.

No prior registration for the event is required. Just show up. The program and speakers will be specified later.

The Strahov dormitories were built between 1964 and 1965. In the past, the dormitories had various uses. They are most closely associated with the Spartan Games, when they were used as changing rooms for athletes. The complex consists of 12 blocks and has a total capacity of 4,567 beds.

According to CTU Rector Prof. Michal Pěchouček, a new mixed academic housing campus is to be built on the site of the current dormitories. "In terms of construction and layout, the current dormitories are not suitable for student housing. Today's students do not need to live in double rooms with one shower per floor. That's not something we want to renovate. It's not just a matter of repainting and buying new furniture. We have to rethink the urban design of the space," said Prof. Pěchouček in an interview with Novinky.cz.

However, students will also have a significant influence on the final design of the dormitories, so don't hesitate to come and join the February workshop on Strahov.
