Tomáš Škarda from ČEZ: Configuration Management in Nuclear Power Plants

For students

The Department of Economics, Management and Humanities of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at CTU in Prague invites you to a lecture on configuration management in nuclear power plants. The lecture will take place on Thursday, April 16 at 11:00 in room T2:C3-52.

The lecture will be delivered by Tomáš Škarda from ČEZ, who works as a configuration management specialist at the Temelín Nuclear Power Plant and is also a graduate of the Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering and Management (EEM) program at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, CTU.

A nuclear power plant is a highly complex system with a long life cycle (approximately 60 years). Over this period, thousands of changes naturally occur—equipment modifications, system upgrades, documentation updates, and interventions by various contractors. Without strict configuration management, control over what actually exists in the plant and how it functions would quickly be lost.

Configuration management is part of quality management. Its main purpose is to ensure that throughout the entire life cycle of the plant, the design requirements (“how it should be”), the physical configuration (“how it actually is”), and the configuration information (“how it is documented”) remain consistent. Configuration management is also applied in other fields such as IT, aviation, the automotive industry, and large infrastructure projects.

In his lecture, Tomáš Škarda will cover the topic in a comprehensive way. Participants will gain both a theoretical foundation and insight into real-world practical experience. The lecture will cover the following topics:

  • Configuration management – general introduction
  • History and development of configuration management
  • International standards and legislation
  • Principles of configuration management in nuclear power plants in the Czech Republic
  • Benefits of implementing configuration management processes
  • A simple practical example
  • Examples of unauthorized changes in nuclear power plants in the Czech Republic

The lecture is open to all students of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at CTU who are interested in energy, process management, and quality management.
