Prof. Vladimír Blažek Receives the Trnka Medal from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at CTU

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering at CTU awarded the Trnka Medal to Prof. Dr.-Ing. Vladimír Blažek, Dr. h. c., professor emeritus at RWTH Aachen University and a long-standing key collaborator of the faculty in the fields of biomedical engineering and international cooperation. He received the award during the POSTER 2026 student research conference, where the medal was presented to him by the Dean of the FEE CTU, Prof. Petr Páta.

“Professor Blažek has long contributed to linking cutting-edge research, education, and international cooperation. His work has significantly strengthened relations between the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FEL) at CTU and RWTH Aachen University and has opened up valuable opportunities for professional and personal development for our students and academics,” said the Dean of FEE CTU, Prof. Petr Páta.

Prof. Blažek is one of the leading figures in European biomedical research. In his professional work, he has long focused on areas such as biomedical optics and optoelectronics in medicine, sensor development, optical imaging, and modeling of human hemodynamics. He is the author of more than 350 scientific publications and holds dozens of patents.

In addition to his scientific work, he has also made significant contributions to the development of international cooperation between FEE CTU and RWTH Aachen. Since 1997, he has annually supported the participation of students from Aachen in the POSTER conference at CTU, thereby contributing over the long term to the internationalization of the faculty and to strengthening its position in the European academic community.

The Trnka Medal is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of the CTU Faculty of Electrical Engineering, its scientific activities, education, and international cooperation.

Justification for the Nomination for the Trnka Medal to Prof. Dr. Ing. Vladimír Blažek, dr. h. c.

"For significant and long-term contribution to the development of relations between CTU FEE and RWTH Aachen, especially for active and systematic building and coordination of institutional cooperation, initiation of joint educational and research activities and support for the mobility of students and academic staff."

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Vladimír Blažek, Dr. h.c., is Professor Emeritus and Senior Advisor, former Chair for Medical Information Technologies, Helmholtz Institute for Biomedical Engineering, RWTH Aachen University. He received his Dr.-Ing. degree in 1979 from RWTH Aachen University. His research, teaching and work areas include biomedical optics and optoelectronics in medicine; biomedical sensors; tissue optics; photon-biotissue interactions; modeling and simulation of human hemodynamics; optical imaging systems; functional hybrid imaging (PPGI and IRTI); remote detection of pain and stress; neonatal and palliative biomedical care; European integration and cooperation in the field of university education; he is the Rector's delegate of the Czech Technical University for university cooperation between Prague and Aachen. He has more than 350 publications in books, journals and conference proceedings, more than 40 patents and patent registrations in Germany and abroad. He is a member of a number of university and government committees, scientific societies and advisory boards of scientific journals. He has been involved in research and teaching in more than eight countries at several universities. During his tenure, he received numerous awards, including the gold Felber Medal of the Czech Technical University in Prague.

Prof. Vladimír Blažek has been instrumental in the long-term involvement of RWTH Aachen students in the POSTER student scientific conference held at the Czech Technical University in Prague, FEE since 1997, thereby significantly contributing to the internationalization of the faculty and the university and strengthening their position in the European academic space.
