Small Modular Reactors as a Challenge for Students: ČEZ and Rolls-Royce SMR Launch University Competition

For students

Would you like to try your hand at a real-world strategic project in the field of the future of energy? The ČEZ Group, Rolls-Royce SMR, and the British Embassy in Prague are announcing the SMR Challenge, an inter-university competition focused on small modular reactors (SMRs). CTU is now looking for students to represent the university in the competition. The deadline for submitting applications for the internal selection process is July 20, 2026.

Before teams are registered for the competition, an internal selection process will take place at CTU. The goal is to form up to two interdisciplinary teams of no more than five members to represent the university. We are looking for students with diverse academic backgrounds—ranging from engineering and natural sciences to economics and management, as well as other disciplines. It is precisely this combination of diverse knowledge and perspectives that will be key to addressing the complex challenges associated with small modular reactors.

The competition is primarily intended for students in their senior years of bachelor’s and master’s programs; one doctoral student may also be part of the team. Over the course of several weeks, participants will work on an assigned topic with the opportunity to consult with industry experts. The resulting projects will be evaluated by a panel of experts, who will select the best teams for the finals.

Students will gain experience addressing a current topic in the energy sector, receive feedback from leading experts, and have the opportunity to present their proposals in English to representatives from both industry and academia. The winning team will receive a visit to the Rolls-Royce SMR test center in Sheffield, UK, and other valuable prizes.

Competition Schedule

  • Applications for the CTU internal selection: by July 20, 2026
  • Presentation of the competition brief: September 8, 2026
  • Project submission: November 16, 2026
  • Finals and awards ceremony: December 8, 2026 at the British Embassy in Prague

Interested in joining? Apply for the internal selection process and get the chance to become part of one of two teams that will represent the Czech Technical University in Prague in the SMR Challenge.

Participants will be selected based on their academic focus, motivation, and the goal of creating interdisciplinary teams that complement each other as effectively as possible. We therefore value not only technical knowledge but also experience in economics, management, project management, communication, or other relevant fields.

Interested candidates can apply via the registration form. If you have any questions, please contact pr@fel.cvut.cz.
