The Energy Olympiad connects secondary school students with the world of energy and gives them an opportunity not only to test their knowledge, but above all to develop their own solutions to current energy challenges. The most successful teams from the school round advance to the final. During the two-day programme at CTU FEE, they work on their projects, consult them with industry experts and then present them to a panel of experts.
“When we founded the Energy Olympiad in 2018, it was difficult to imagine that over the course of nine editions we would surpass the milestone of 10,000 student participations. For us, this is above all confirmation that secondary school students have a strong and lasting interest in energy. Every year, they also show us that they are capable of coming up with high-quality and often surprising solutions,” says Adéla Holasová, founder of the Energy Olympiad.
From Energy Sharing to Batteries and Mine-Shaft Storage
The results of last year’s competition illustrate the wide range of topics addressed by the contestants. The winning team, Prachovky from Biskupské Gymnázium in Brno, developed an information campaign designed to introduce the public to energy sharing and consumption flexibility. Other finalists explored topics such as the use of retired electric vehicle batteries, energy self-sufficiency of cities, and seasonal energy storage in mine shafts.
“The Energy Olympiad clearly shows how the energy sector itself is changing. It has long ceased to be solely about energy generation and transmission. Artificial intelligence, data, modern control methods and smart grids are playing an increasingly important role. It is precisely the connection between energy and other technological fields that creates space for new solutions. And it is great to see that secondary school students are already capable of finding them,” says Prof. Petr Páta, Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at CTU.
The final also includes expert lectures and mentoring by specialists from energy companies and academia. Spending two days at CTU FEE also gives students an opportunity to experience the environment of a technical university and learn about further study opportunities in energy-related fields. In addition to material prizes, the winners of the competition may also be offered admission to CTU FEE without having to take the entrance examination.
About the Energy Olympiad
The Energy Olympiad was established in 2018 in cooperation with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague with the aim of improving energy literacy among the younger generation, encouraging interest in technical fields, and connecting secondary school students with industry professionals. Every year, hundreds of teams from across the Czech Republic take part, with the national final traditionally hosted by CTU FEE. The general partner of the competition is ČEPS, a.s. The Energy Olympiad is held under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic and the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic.
