Autonomous Formula, AI and Smart Energy: FEL CTU to Showcase the Future of Mobility at Prague Exhibition Grounds

For students For applicants For employees Cooperation with partners

Autonomous vehicles, electromobility, artificial intelligence and smart city technologies will be showcased on Saturday, 19 September, at the Prague Exhibition Grounds. Smart Mobility Day is organised by Valeo in cooperation with other partners from the automotive industry, transport research, smart cities and technical education. The Czech Technical University in Prague’s Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FEL CTU) will present its student-built Formula Student cars as well as research into the technologies driving the development of autonomous and intelligent mobility.

The long-standing partnership between FEL CTU and Valeo connects academic research and education with the needs of the technology industry. Smart Mobility Day will bring this collaboration directly to the Prague Exhibition Grounds in Holešovice, giving the public an opportunity to see technologies that are otherwise developed and tested in research laboratories, development centres and test facilities.

“The future of mobility is not being shaped by a single discipline. It requires cutting-edge sensors, artificial intelligence, automated control, communication and energy systems – and it is precisely this combination that we can offer at FEL CTU. For our students, it is also exceptionally valuable to work with partners such as Valeo and gain hands-on experience with the technologies and challenges that today’s industry is addressing while they are still studying,” says Prof. Petr Páta, Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at CTU.

One of the main attractions at the FEL CTU exhibition will be the electric Formula Student cars developed by the EFORCE Prague Formula student team. This time, visitors will not see them merely as static exhibits. On a dedicated track, the team will demonstrate one of the disciplines of the international Formula Student competitions – Skidpad, in which the car drives around a figure-eight-shaped course.

There will also be a direct contest between human and machine. The same course will be completed both by a driver and fully autonomously, allowing visitors to compare the performance of a racing driver with that of an autonomous system. They will see up close a vehicle that CTU students design and build themselves before taking it into competition against university teams from around the world.

EFORCE Prague Formula is made up primarily of students from FEL CTU and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at CTU. Every year, they develop an electric Formula Student car capable of both driver-controlled and fully autonomous operation. The car also serves as a platform for the practical development of electromobility, automated control and autonomous systems. The students then put their skills to the test in the highly competitive international Formula Student series.

From Sensors and Artificial Intelligence to Energy Systems

On Saturday, 19 September, FEL CTU will present smart mobility at the Prague Exhibition Grounds in a much broader context. The Department of Measurement will showcase research into advanced sensors and data-processing methods for autonomous vehicles and drones. These technologies contribute to more precise navigation as well as greater safety and reliability of autonomous systems.

The Department of Control Engineering will present projects focused on intelligent control of autonomous vehicles and robots. The team led by Prof. Tomáš Haniš works on technologies that enable autonomous vehicles to plan routes independently, respond to obstacles and other road users, and navigate safely through changing environments. The research combines advanced control methods, motion planning, sensor data processing and elements of artificial intelligence. FEL CTU students gain hands-on experience with these technologies already during their studies and go on to win medals at prestigious international university competitions in autonomous mobility and robotics.

The Vision for Robotics and Autonomous Systems (VRAS) research group, led by Prof. Tomáš Svoboda from the Department of Cybernetics, will demonstrate how artificial intelligence algorithms enable autonomous vehicles and robots such as Helhest to perceive and interpret their surroundings. The systems use information from cameras, LiDARs, depth sensors and thermal sensors.

Another dimension of electromobility will be presented by the LIMESS research group, which brings together transport, artificial intelligence and energy systems. Its research includes Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technologies, electric vehicle charging optimisation, charging infrastructure modelling and the use of AI to control energy systems. The +/- FEL Student Club will also take part in the programme, hosting a soldering workshop suitable for children as well.

The Future of Transport in One Place

Smart Mobility Day will bring autonomous cars, robots, electromobility, virtual reality and other technologies transforming modern transport together in a single-day programme. Some of the exhibits and demonstrations will be interactive, and the event is open to the general public, including families with children.
