Prof. Zbyněk Škvor from the Department of Electromagnetic Field at FEE CTU has been awarded the Leonardo da Vinci Medal for his outstanding contribution to engineering education. It is the highest distinction awarded by SEFI, the “Société Européenne pour la Formation des Ingénieurs” (European Society for Engineering Education).

Prof. Škvor received the award during the 54th SEFI Conference, held at CTU in Prague on 7–10 September 2026, which brought together more than 700 participants from 43 countries. The medal was presented to him by Prof. Emanuela Tilley, President of SEFI (pictured).

At the very beginning of his academic and research career, immediately after the political changes in Czechoslovakia in 1989, Zbyněk Škvor became one of the three founders of the Czechoslovak Section of IEEE. This helped provide the Czech and Slovak engineering communities with faster access to professional literature in English and supported the development of contacts with the international engineering community worldwide. This initiative made a significant contribution to the development of engineering education not only in the former Czechoslovakia but also in other Central European countries.

Prof. Škvor subsequently served the electrical engineering community for several terms as Chair of the Czechoslovak Section of IEEE and as a member of the IEEE Region 8 Committee, covering Europe and Africa. He also coordinated the region’s voluntary contribution fund, helping engineers from economically disadvantaged countries participate in professional conferences.

Since 1990, Zbyněk Škvor has been a pioneer in using computers and the Internet to support independent student work in engineering education. He developed systems for distributing individual assignments, automatically checking students’ answers, and providing guidance towards correct solutions via email and, later, the web.

Zbyněk Škvor has also held several prominent academic positions at CTU, including serving as Acting Rector. Throughout these roles, he consistently supported the development of engineering education. He also promoted international relations and cooperation between CTU and numerous technical universities around the world; for example, he initiated CTU’s involvement in the EuroTeQ alliance of leading European technical universities. From 2017 to 2024, he served as a member of the SEFI Board of Directors.
