A graduate of the master's program in Medical Electronics and Bioinformatics (BIO) at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague, Ing. Aneta Furmanová, won the prestigious Czechia-Slovakia IT SPY 2025 competition, which recognizes the best theses in the field of computer science and information technology. The jury selected from 58 nominated projects, which are among the best of more than 1,400 theses defended last year at leading Czech and Slovak universities.

The award ceremony took place on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, in the Refectory of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Charles University. The evening was hosted by journalist and modern technology expert Miloš Čermák. Eight of the best projects selected by a panel of experts competed in the IT SPY 2025 finals. The competition highlights the broad spectrum of current research in the field of computer science and artificial intelligence – from healthcare to space applications.

Winning project: machine learning for a better understanding of sonic crystals

The winning thesis, Modeling the Properties of the Band Structure of Sonic Crystals Using Machine Learning, was written at the Department of Physics at the Czech Technical University in Prague under the supervision of RNDr. MgA. Viktor Hruška, Ph.D.

The topic of Aneta Furmanová's thesis was modeling the structure of sonic crystals using machine learning with an emphasis on the physical interpretation of the results. This approach not only allows for a deeper understanding of the behavior of sonic crystals, but also enables faster and more efficient design of new solutions for reducing noise pollution. According to the WHO, noise pollution is the second largest environmental cause of health problems.

Aneta Furmanová has already published her results in the Q1 Journal of Sound and Vibration and presented them at two international acoustics conferences, Internoise 2024 and DAS/DAGA 2025. The winner is currently continuing her doctoral studies in the Acoustics program at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague.

FEE CTU once again confirms the outstanding level of its students

Aneta Furmanová's victory follows on from the faculty's extraordinary series of successes in the IT SPY competition. Our students have been scoring points continuously since 2019:

●       2025 – 1st place: Ing. Aneta Furmanová

●       2024 – 2nd place: Ing. Jiří Janota

●       2023 – 2nd place: Ing. Pavlína Koutecká

●       2022 – 1st place: Ing. Jiří Ulrich
