Application of FMCW radar and additional sensors for localization and navigation

  • Branch of study: Electrical Engineering and Communications
  • Department: Department of Radioelectronics
    • Description:
Modern automotive FMCW (frequency-modulated continuous wave) radars provide range resolution of several centimeters, estimate of target velocity and azimuth. With proper radar output processing it is possible to utilize SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping) methods for navigation of the platform. Unlike the commonly used LIDAR sensor, the radar functions correctly even in fog or smoke. It is also advantageous to supplement radar with additional sensors, e.g. IMU, UWB localization, etc. The goal of the thesis is identification of convenient sensor set with FMCW radar and development of localization algorithms suitable for environments without satellite navigation coverage.
