On Tuesday, 12 December 2024, the President of the Czech Republic Petr Pavel, together with the Minister of Education, Youth and Sports Mikuláš Bek, awarded appointment decrees to 73 new professors. Two new professors from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University, Prof. Zdeněk Bečvář from the Department of Telecommunication Technology and Prof. Miloslav Čapek from the Department of Electromagnetic Fields, also received their diplomas in person in the Grand Hall of the Karolina in Prague.

Profiles of the new professors

Prof. Ing. Zdeněk BEČVÁŘ, Ph.D.

for field of study: Telecommunication Technology

Zdeněk Bečvář founded the 5Gmobile research lab in 2015. It is the predecessor of the newer 6Gmobile research lab. Scientists from the Department of Telecommunication Engineering are researching and developing the next generation of 6G mobile networks in it, which are expected to be launched around 2030. The lab is addressing a number of other current issues, such as the use of machine learning for advanced terminal-to-terminal communication, car-to-car communication, or the use of drones as flying base stations, which could help in the event of a local mobile network outage.

Zdenek Bečvář is a senior member of the IEEE and Communications Society, and an associate editor of IEEE Wireless Communications Letters. He has published more than 100 journal and conference papers and is the author of several patents. In 2017, he won the best publication award at the European Wireless conference and in 2015, he won the bronze medal for demonstrating an edge computing application at the 2015 ACM Mobicom App contest. Since 2019, Prof. Bečvář has been annually ranked among the top two percent of scientists in the ranking compiled by the American Stanford University.

Prof. Ing. Miloslav ČAPEK, Ph.D.

For field of study: Radioelectronics

Miloslav Čapek is the holder of the prestigious JUNIOR STAR grant, which he received from the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic in 2020. The project deals with the development of efficient shape optimization methods, which will allow finding new and atypical shapes for use in wireless, microwave and optical devices. In 2023 he was awarded, together with Assoc. Kurt Schab of Santa Clara University, USA, the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society's Professional Paper Award for his paper on modal theory. He is the principal architect and lead developer of the Antenna Toolbox for MATLAB (AToM) toolbox for the MATLAB programming environment.

Miloslav Čapek is a Senior Member of the IEEE and the Radioengineering Society, an Associate Editor of IET Microwaves, Antennas & Propagation, was a EurAAP delegate and Associate Editor of Radioengineering, as well as a member of the teams of several national and international projects. He has published more than 100 technical and conference papers as author or co-author.  Prof. Čapek's main research interests include electromagnetism and small antenna theory, optimization and numerical modelling.
