Sign up for Biosignal Challenge 2024: Sleep apnea detection

Challenges For applicants

Sleep apnea, characterized by repetitive cycles of interrupted breathing, affects approximately 10 % of middle-aged adults, especially overweight or obese men. However, nearly 80 % of people with this disorder remain undiagnosed and untreated.

The disease not only leads to the cessation of oxygen supply and consequently a decrease in blood oxygen saturation but also to a significant decline in sleep quality and overall patient health. Patients often wake up feeling tired, even after a full night's sleep.

The Biosignal Challenge 2024 aims to develop an algorithm for detecting sleep apnea using modern computational resources and annotated signals of airflow, oxygenation, and ECG. A robustly designed and reliably functioning algorithm would significantly accelerate the work of physicians who currently have to manually review multi-hour recordings and annotate apneic episodes.

The assignment can be found on the Biosignal Challenge website. You can enter the competition until March 20th 2024 via the registration form as an individual or as a team of two or three. The deadline for submitting your solution is May 17th. The award ceremony will occur during the Summer Biomedical Day at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of CTU on Friday, May 24th at 16:00.

Prizes:

  • 1st place: 15 000 CZK
  • 2sn place: 9 000 CZK
  • 3rd place: 6 000 CZK

The Biosignal Challenge is open to students from all Czech universities. If you have any questions regarding the competition, please get in touch with the organizational team via email bsch@fel.cvut.cz.
