How to be a better teacher? The autumn series of meetings at FEL CTU starts on 13 September

For employees

The first of eight informal meetings of CTU teachers at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering who want to share their teaching experiences will take place on 13 September 2024. These talks will aim to offer a platform to connect like-minded teachers, as well as to help aspiring teachers.  The organizers want to create an ideal place where experience will flow not only horizontally but also vertically (between 'senior' academics and students) and where various aspects of teaching can be critically discussed. Anyone actively involved in teaching and would like to join in an open discussion will be welcome.

The series of talks has been developed as a consensus among active PhD students, heads of departments and vice-deans. "In the spring, we conducted a survey of staff and Ph.D. students in the Department of Cybernetics about how satisfied they are with their involvement in teaching and what would be most helpful to them to improve their teaching. A large part of the answers mentioned the lack of pedagogical training for beginning teachers, the lack of a summary of procedures and recommendations on what works and what does not work in teaching technical subjects, or the lack of a platform for the exchange of experiences among FEL teachers. In response to these suggestions, a series of autumn events is being created, which - we hope - will improve the situation and help (not only) beginning teachers," said Dr. Petr Pošík from the Department of Cybernetics at FEL CTU.

Ing. Martin Zoula from the Department of Computers and the Artificial Intelligence Centre (AIC) adds "As a PhD student at the faculty, I teach programming in C. I love teaching, but I had to figure out how to teach largely on my own. I'm looking forward to meeting other practitioners and speakers at upcoming events to compare my experiences with and take another step forward."

A total of 8 sessions are planned for the winter term, and you can register for free via the new website. The first one will take place in room T2:B2-39d and will be divided into two sessions: a morning session from 10:30 to 12:00 and an afternoon session from 13:00 to 14:30.
