In this article, we deal with the problem of Hybrid Energy Harvesting control strategies, while paying attention to their properties and suggesting criteria to assess their suitability for specific energy harvesting techniques, as well as their application in different areas of technology—especially Wireless Sensor Networks and the Internet of Things. Many research works have already been published on the topic of combining resources for Energy Harvesting; nevertheless, a comprehensive review of the control strategies for such systems and a comparison of their most important properties is missing. This is the genesis and the main subject of this article. We have performed a deep research investigation of available resources. We have identified eight different control strategies and defined a set of the most important parameters (including their possible ranges/states) as criteria to be able to compare them. The corresponding sections of this article begin with a general description of the respective strategies and their principles (including generalized schemes), which is followed by specific examples of best practices. The key conclusions of the performed analysis are summarized in a comparison table that allows the readers to make their own conclusions and choices.

In this paper we are introducing results of the Erasmus+ project "Modernisation of VET through Collaboration with the Industry (MoVET)", the main objective of which was to improve the quality of education in technical areas at professional secondary schools by establishing close collaboration between these schools and industrial companies, stimulating students’ interest in technical disciplines and improving their motivation to study. In addition to new materials for teaching and learning, an important role was played by industrial partners of the projects who were expected to back national and international internships of VET students with the help of tailored ECVET (European Credit System for Vocational Education and Training) units; however, due to the pandemic and lockdown, only the very first student exchanges could take place, while the remaining ones had to be replaced by online events. Detailed description of these virtual internships is provided and our experience is summarized.

Nowadays, increasing the demand for data and the complexity of wireless sensor network hardware lead to an increase in the energy consumption of the respective devices. Using a huge number of WSN nodes is required to provide sufficient data to meet the requirements of modern applications. Energy harvesting systems are an ideal response to the rise in energy prices and costs of maintenance, but using a single energy harvester is insufficient because of the discrete nature of renewable energy resources and the high demand for energy in modern IoT systems. The solution is to harvest energy from several different resources to provide for a continuous energy source. In this paper, we introduce a new design of a platform for harvesting and combining energy from different renewable energy resources and storing it in a device equipped with battery management system to provide information about the current state of charge.

Increased demands from industry for specialists in engineering and in general on STEM jobs in Europe and all over the world need a more diverse skills profile comprising both hard skills and core transversal competences like digital skills and soft skills. Preparing engineering and STEM candidates with non-technical skills, including skills such as critical thinking, idea generation and interdisciplinary ways of working, seems particularly important and a necessary task. Regardless of the domain of soft skills in any workplace, education at the colleges and universities is no stranger to this fact. However, despite the growing interest in incorporating soft skills in engineering studies curricula, there is no common agreement in many aspects. For example, it is not clear which soft skills should be selected, how they should be taught, or how they should be assessed. On the other hand, there are also differences depending on the university institution involved or the geographic area. At present, the recent push towards digital transformation that society now requires has increased the number of frameworks and lists of soft skills. Another characteristic of these skills is that they need to be acquired in an active way, which has become a challenge that has given rise to multiple pedagogical approaches. The objective of this paper is to present our investigations to identify the common soft skills that are occupationally required in the job market in Europe and beyond, and academically fostered for engineering graduates.

Increasing the efficiency of the solar energy harvesting system is an urgent need in light of the climate changes we live in nowadays. The most significant data to be processed in the photovoltaic harvesters are the curve of solar radiation intensity to achieve the maximum benefits of the solar incident light. This processing contains complicated procedures, and the used algorithms are also high computational power-consuming which makes using special software and high potential hardware essential requirements. An explanation of the Minimum Energy Effect method is presented in this article. Our proposed algorithm uses this method to provide a simple and high-accuracy mathematical tool for generating a simple alternative curve instead of the complicated original nonlinear curve of solar radiation intensity. The produced curve is suitable for further operations, such as derivatives, integrals, or even simple addition/subtraction. Our algorithm provides a gradual procedure to find an optimum solution of the equation system, unlike the iterative methods. In addition, the results of analyzing the effect of time-division density showed the relationship between the speed of solving the task and the accuracy of results.

This article presents a verification process of a new metric designed for transmission continuity optimization. Unlike the commonly used metrics, it focuses solely on flow continuity and sustainability, disregarding the maximization of throughput or minimization of latency. We base our metric on inter-packet gaps analysis and ordering of packets from multiple communication flows into a final flow. We also compare our metric with the commonly used one based on Jain's fairness index in cases when optimization of communication flow sustainability is the priority. We present the evaluation of results and analyze the data processing complexity. Moreover, we discuss the weaknesses and strengths of different approaches to communication flow optimization.

This paper deals with the issue of mobile device localization in the environment of buildings, which is suitable for use in healthcare or crisis management. The developed localization system is based on wireless Local Area Network (LAN) infrastructure (commonly referred to as Wi-Fi), evaluating signal strength from different access points, using the fingerprinting method for localization. The most serious problems consist in multipath signal propagation and the different sensitivities (calibration) of Wi-Fi adapters installed in different mobile devices. To solve these issues, an algorithm based on fuzzy logic is proposed to optimize the localization performance. The localization system consists of five elements, which are mobile applications for Android OS, a fuzzy derivation model, and a web surveillance environment for displaying the localization results. All of these elements use a database and shared storage on a virtualized server running Ubuntu. The developed system is implemented in Java for Android-based mobile devices and successfully tested. The average accuracy is satisfactory for determining the position of a client device on the level of rooms.

  • Anotace:
The paper is focused on communication signal transmission over specific topology of medium-voltage overhead power distribution lines with crosstalk between different power sections. The following parameters have been measured and modeled: channel frequency response, interference, background noise. On this basis we have set up models and computed the estimated data throughputs for narrowband Power Line Communication technology using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex modulation. High intensity of crosstalk can be advantageously used for transmitting of telecommunication signals between the different sections of the network; on the other hand, it is limited to the coexistence of separate communications networks, which mutually interfere, and thus the achievable transmission capacity is dramatically restricted.

On Specific Problems Related to Communication over Middle-Voltage Distribution Lines

  • Pracoviště: Katedra telekomunikační techniky
  • Anotace:
The paper is focused on specific topologies of middle-voltage (MV) power distribution lines with respect to their properties influencing the transmission of communication signals. The following parameters have been measured in the rural-area 22kV distribution network of CEZ Distribuce, a.s.: channel frequency response, interference and background noise. On this basis we have set up models and computed the estimated data throughputs for narrowband PLC (Power Line Communication) technology using OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex) modulation. Crucial experience for further implementation and operation of systems for communication support of Smart Grids has been obtained and presented.

  • Anotace:
The article introduces a novel concept of a PLC modem as a complement to the existing G3 and PRIME standards for communications using medium- or high-voltage overhead or cable lines. The proposed concept is based on the fact that the levels of impulse noise and frequency selectivity are lower on high-voltage lines than on low-voltage ones. Also, the demands for “cost-effective” circuitry design are not so crucial as in the case of modems for low-voltage level. In contract to these positive conditions, however, there is the need to overcome much longer distances and to take into account low SNR on the receiving side. With respect to the listed reasons, our concept makes use of MCM, instead of OFDM that is advantageous only for static transmission environments with high frequency selectivity, and the assumption of low SNR is compensated through the use of an efficient channel coding based on a serially concatenated turbo code. In addition, MCM offers lower latency and PAPR compared to OFDM. Therefore, when using MCM, it is possible to excite the line with higher power through relatively simple and cheap final stages. The proposed concept has been verified during experimental transmission of testing data over a real, 5 km long, 22kV overhead line.

The paper describes the ways of collaboration between a technical university and a vocational college, its results in pedagogy, coordinated building of technical background, as well as sharing of facilities and lectures. We are focusing on the response from vocational college students and teachers who are involved in the shared education; the results are based on the survey performed during the current academic year. We are also going to mention strategic consequences with respect to the need for increasing attractiveness of technical disciplines and informatics in the society. The project involves many different activities. The first one consists in making the university laboratories open to vocational college students and teachers. Other planned activities include extended education of vocational college teachers at the university, so that they get the most recent knowledge in their areas of interest. Then there is the plan for joint building of laboratories – experts from the university will prepare a set of laboratory workplaces and tasks in the premises of the vocational college and provide the necessary training to its teachers. The international dimension of the collaboration is reflected in a visit of vocational college students and teachers at the European NGN Centre in Bratislava, Slovakia – thanks to a traditional cooperation between CTU in Prague and STU in Bratislava. In order to introduce the university approach to education, there is prepared a special activity: supervising of students’ individual and graduation projects by university lecturers. Students can hereby get new knowledge and dynamic impulses that may result in substantially higher quality of the projects. Students can also compete for special scholarships offered to the authors of the best projects. Another topic of the paper is related to the benefits that the described collaboration brings for the university.

This situation has many negative consequences, from dramatic reduction of financial support to successive atrophy of education as a whole. Moreover, in the horizon of several years we have to expect the lack of young prospective engineers entering the job market. This may lead to lower competitiveness of the domestic industry in the European as well as the global context. Therefore it should be a priority of technical universities to attract the attention of future students by all means in the early stage – at secondary or even elementary schools. At the Department of Telecommunication Engineering there are currently running two projects focused on establishing of links with secondary schools. The paper describes particular means, methods and approaches of this cooperation.
