Plasma pre-treatment of polypropylene surface for industrial purposes

    The paper describes an experimental investigation of the possibility of industrial modification of surface wettability and adhesion of polymers by the action of a plasma of a gliding discharge generated in air at atmospheric pressure in a simulated production process. The test material was polypropylene plates (PP). The modification was performed by a device with a multi-electrode (four pairs) system, which is not common. The quality of pre-processing and usability was evaluated primarily in terms of the industrial requirements, which means a change in wettability and adhesion expressed by the contact angle/surface free energy value in dependence to sample exposure time expressed by the conveyor belt speed. The surface free energy assessment of a treated polymeric surface by contact angle measurement was carried out by analyzing static sessile drops and evaluated by Owens–Wendt–Rabel–Kaelble (OWRK) model. The results determined a set of operating parameters at which the modification process meets the industrial requirements. By evaluating the change in surface free energy in relation to the storage time, the degree of hydrophobic recovery of the treated samples, i.e. the time stability of the plasma-treated surface, was also determined. It has been found that plasma-treated PP surface fully meets industrial demands and can be stored for at least 50 days.

Positioning of the Precursor Gas Inlet in an Atmospheric Dielectric Barrier Reactor, and its Effect on the Quality of Deposited TiOx Thin Film Surface

    Thin film technology has become pervasive in many applications in recent years, but it remains difficult to select the best deposition technique. A further consideration is that, due to ecological demands, we are forced to search for environmentally benign methods. One such method might be the application of cold plasmas, and there has already been a rapid growth in studies of cold plasma techniques. Plasma technologies operating at atmospheric pressure have been attracting increasing attention. The easiest way to obtain low temperature plasma at atmospheric pressure seems to be through atmospheric dielectric barrier discharge (ADBD). We used the plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD) method applying atmospheric dielectric barrier discharge (ADBD) plasmafor TiOx thin films deposition, employing titanium isopropoxide (TTIP) and oxygen as reactants, and argon as a working gas. ADBD was operated in filamentary mode. The films were deposited on glass. We studied the quality of the deposited TiOx thin film surface for various precursor gas inlet positions in the ADBD reactor. The best thin films quality was achieved when the precursor gases were brought close to the substrate surface directly through the inlet placed in one of the electrodes.High hydrophilicity of the samples was proved by contact angle tests (CA). The film morphology was tested by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The thickness of the thin films varied in the range of (80 ÷ 210) nm in dependence on the composition of the reactor atmosphere. XPS analyses indicate that composition of the films is more like the composition of TiOxCy.

    Advanced oxidation processes were originally developed for low-temperature water cleaning processes. They are based on production of high oxidative radicals like atomic oxygen or OH groups, which destroy various organic pollutants. Atmospheric plasma discharges belong to high-effective sources of oxidizing radicals. Among various methods of plasma production at atmospheric pressure, the gliding arc belongs to sources with high industrial potential because of its high efficiency and simple construction. For proper and quick employment and particular process optimization detailed knowledge of plasma source parameters is of great importance. We will present results of complex investigation of an gliding arc discharge and optimization of an gliding arc head construction for industrial applications. Using proper diagnostic techniques optimal working conditions were set for different applications. Examples of particular applications of the gliding arc will be given.

The films0 chemical composition, surface topography, wettability and aging were analysed, particularly the dependence between precursor and reactant concentration in the discharge atmosphere and its impact on TiOx films properties. Titanium in films near the surface area was oxidized, the dominating species being TiO2 and substoichiometric titanium oxides. The films exhibited contamination with carbon, as a result of atmospheric oxygen and carbon dioxide reactions with radicals in films. No relevant difference of the film surface due to oxygen concentration inside the reactor was determined. CONNECTION BETWEEN ELECTRODES SHAPE AND PLASMA FLOW OF THE GLIDING DISCHARGE

    Contribution deals with form of electrodes and corresponding shape of plasma flow in the gliding discharge reactor. Gliding discharge sustained in air at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. There were studied three elemental electrodes configuration. Plasma was investigated by means of its visible spectral lines for identification of the most reactive plasma region in the flow. Results can be helpful in shaping of the gliding discharge reactor ionized gas region.

    Attraction of plasma technologies is mostly related with plasma released charged species, short-living active radicals and energetic photons capable of many specific reactions. In contrast with the low-pressure or high-pressure plasmas atmospheric pressure discharge plasma (APDP) is very competitive because of avoidance of expensive vacuum equipment. APDP is generated at the atmospheric pressure, i.e. at the pressure of the order of 1 bar. Atmospheric plasma sources can be classified according to the method of plasma excitation. The selection of the plasma source and its design also depend on specific requirements of each usage. corona, dielectric barrier discharge, radio-frequency discharge, microwave-excited discharge and plasma jets are often used.

Plasma Flow in Different Gliding Discharge Reactor Configurations

    We investigated connection between form of electrodes and shape of the plasma ow. Experiments were performed in air at atmospheric pressure. For identification of the most reactive plasma region in the ow, plasma was investigated by means of its visible spectral lines. There were tested three basic configurations of wire electrodes representing their limit forms (low-divergent, circular, high-divergent) and recognized ionized regions of the ow. Results can be used in decision making about shaping of the gliding discharge reactor ionized gas region, especially in case when both volume and surface treatment is needed.

    Our contribution takes a step towards the transfer of the well proven plasma enchased chemical vapour deposition (PE CVD) method into the atmospheric pressure region and discusses possible application of DBD sustaining in argon with admixture of hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) and oxygen for deposition of SiOx thin films. Films were deposited on polystyrene substrates. The relations between thin film parameters and deposition process conditions were studied. Our research focused on influence of surface morphology and chemical composition in dependence on working parameters. We concentrated on connection between concentration of the organosilicon reagent transported by the argon flow into the discharge region, concentration of the oxygen in the discharge atmosphere and surface properties of SiOx thin films.

Treatment of Polyester Fabric in Atmospheric Dielectric Barrier Discharge Operated at Low Frequencies

    Radicals and ions generated in discharge sustaining in proper gas together with its intense ultraviolet radiation are suitable to break molecular bonds and initiate physical and chemical processes in uppermost atomic layers of a material surface. Polyester is one of the most produced and used textile component, unfortunately it is also known with some unwanted properties, e.g. high hydrophobicity, electrostatic charge creation, pilling etc. To influence the efficiency of this process, we tried to increase the input energy of the plasma reactor by means of the supply voltage frequency. Correlation of the supply voltage frequency and modification efficiency presented by hydrophilicity changes expressed by means of the area of feathering time evolution (drop test) is described in this paper. Experiments proved that growing reactor input energy/supply voltage frequency shortened necessary modification time.

Atmospheric DBD Application for TiOx Thin Film Deposition on Polymeric Substrates

POLYESTER FABRIC MODIFIED WITH ATMOSPHERIC DIELECTRIC BARRIER DISCHARGE SUPPLIED WITH VOLTAGE OF DIFFERENT FREQUENCIES

    Final characteristics of polymers are the compromise between wanted surface and bulk properties. Important change of the polymer use-value can be caused by modification of characteristics of its upper structural units (i.e. in region under the surface deep some tens of nanometers). These changes - and modification - can be performed i. a. by treatment with the "cold" plasma and moreover with low costs and minimum environmental impact. Modification of polymer surface characteristics may proceed during functionalization, when plasma particles react with polymer surface molecules and new chemical functional groups are formed on polymer surface. These chemical reactions can be influenced with composition of atmosphere in the plasma reactor, e.g. application of oxygen plasma leads to polymer surface energy and wettability increase.     In our study we investigated the process of atmospheric dielectric barrier discharge (ADBD) application for deposition of titanium oxide thin film on polyamide ropes to improve their abrasion resistance and hydrophobicity. Exploration focused on optimisation of the deposition process. Surface morphology was studied by the SEM. The rope fiber abrasion tests were performed, too. The samples covered with TiOx thin film proved to be more abrasion resistant. their surface stayed relatively steady in comparison with unmodified samples after the abrasion test.

    Paper contains results of the applicability study of the atmospheric pressure dielectric discharge (ADBD) for synchronous treatment of several sheets of polyester fabric. Treatment usually results in modification of the uppermost atomic layers of a material surface and leaves the bulk characteristics unaffected. Effectivity of the modification process was determined with hydrophilicity measurements. Plasma induced surface changes of textiles were also proven by identification of new functional groups at the modified polyester fabric surface. It has shown distinct variation of the textile surface after plasma treatment.

    Paper describes investigation of polyethylene powder modification using plasma reactor exploiting the dielectric barrier discharge burning in air at atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature. For the test modification the polyethylene powder was used. Effectivity of the modification process was successfully tested by ESCA scans that proved formation of new functional groups at the modified powder surface. Modification effect was also evaluated by means of dynamic capillarity rising measurements. Powder capillarity tests proved significant powder capillarity changes. Modification effect reduction was small (max. reduction about 20% during 1100 days after the modification date), hence modification effect is also very time stable.
