In this article, we deal with the problem of Hybrid Energy Harvesting control strategies, while paying attention to their properties and suggesting criteria to assess their suitability for specific energy harvesting techniques, as well as their application in different areas of technology—especially Wireless Sensor Networks and the Internet of Things. Many research works have already been published on the topic of combining resources for Energy Harvesting; nevertheless, a comprehensive review of the control strategies for such systems and a comparison of their most important properties is missing. This is the genesis and the main subject of this article. We have performed a deep research investigation of available resources. We have identified eight different control strategies and defined a set of the most important parameters (including their possible ranges/states) as criteria to be able to compare them. The corresponding sections of this article begin with a general description of the respective strategies and their principles (including generalized schemes), which is followed by specific examples of best practices. The key conclusions of the performed analysis are summarized in a comparison table that allows the readers to make their own conclusions and choices.

Nowadays, increasing the demand for data and the complexity of wireless sensor network hardware lead to an increase in the energy consumption of the respective devices. Using a huge number of WSN nodes is required to provide sufficient data to meet the requirements of modern applications. Energy harvesting systems are an ideal response to the rise in energy prices and costs of maintenance, but using a single energy harvester is insufficient because of the discrete nature of renewable energy resources and the high demand for energy in modern IoT systems. The solution is to harvest energy from several different resources to provide for a continuous energy source. In this paper, we introduce a new design of a platform for harvesting and combining energy from different renewable energy resources and storing it in a device equipped with battery management system to provide information about the current state of charge.

Increasing the efficiency of the solar energy harvesting system is an urgent need in light of the climate changes we live in nowadays. The most significant data to be processed in the photovoltaic harvesters are the curve of solar radiation intensity to achieve the maximum benefits of the solar incident light. This processing contains complicated procedures, and the used algorithms are also high computational power-consuming which makes using special software and high potential hardware essential requirements. An explanation of the Minimum Energy Effect method is presented in this article. Our proposed algorithm uses this method to provide a simple and high-accuracy mathematical tool for generating a simple alternative curve instead of the complicated original nonlinear curve of solar radiation intensity. The produced curve is suitable for further operations, such as derivatives, integrals, or even simple addition/subtraction. Our algorithm provides a gradual procedure to find an optimum solution of the equation system, unlike the iterative methods. In addition, the results of analyzing the effect of time-division density showed the relationship between the speed of solving the task and the accuracy of results.

The efficient utilization of energy sources seems to be one of the most challenging problems for designers and scientists alike. This challenge particularly applies to power electronics, where the increasing value of energy density leads to demands for optimization processes and better exploitation (and distribution) of available power sources. As a result, the implementation of frequency-controlled systems is more often in the spotlight. The systems with doubly fed induction machines and a frequency converter in the rotor circuit are typical representatives of these demands. In a wide spectrum of power electronic systems, frequency converters are often used that have a constant current, a diode rectifier, and a thyristor inverter. This article provides a novel approach to modeling methodology, and presents a unique comparison of four different frequency converter schemes that are connected to a doubly fed induction machine. This article presents the modeling methodology itself, as well as the results based on an asynchronous generator motor fed by different frequency converters, a spectral analysis of the output voltage of the used frequency converters, and a comparison of the different technologies. Based on the above, this paper recommends the use of a multistage-multilevel frequency converter scheme.

Extending the lifetime of the wireless sensor node is a critical issue facing the developing of the wireless sensor networks. One of the solutions is employing the energy harvesting technologies to collect renewable energy from the ambient environment. For indoor Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) applications, the chosen of the energy harvester is based on the requirements of the application and the environment. Our application will be used in offices and hospitals so using a noiseless technology is required. So, the photovoltaic energy is the best solution which matches the requirements. In this paper, we will present the design of the photovoltaic energy harvesting system with mathematical modeling and the results of the real experiments.

The paper gives an overview of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) from the viewpoint of energy consumption focused on the network security. The security issues are nowadays significant for all wireless (and wired as well) networks; however, in wireless sensors, limitations of the available energy have to be taken into account. Therefore, the network managers/designers have to decide whether a secure communication in the system required or not. The major part of the paper is in presenting the energy consumption model implemented in Matlab/Simulink environment to evaluate the energy requirements of each considerable security solution compared to opened (means nonsecure) system.

  • Anotace:
Wireless sensor networks have strict constrains in size, weight and energy. The conflict of long lifetime and strict energy constrain brings a natural integration of energy harvesting into wireless sensor networks. A modified low energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (LEACH) protocol has been proposed to increase the network life time. Modified LEACH is divided into two main phases at the first setup phase and at the second steady state phase. Setup phase has been modified such that cluster head (CH) selection will be selected only from advanced nodes. Results showed significant improvement in WSN overall lifetime. Simulations show number of dead nodes vs rounds. Comparison between pure LEACH and modified one showed significant improvement in lifetime, also comparison between modified LEACH and energy aware multi-hop multi-path (EAMMH) protocol shows significant improvement in performance.

  • Anotace:
This paper deals with smart grids and social acceptance of them and based on various studies from this field attempts to answer questions such as how the society perceives this new technology, what are the sources of an influence, and what should be done in order to achieve a smooth implementation of smart grids with as few obstacles as possible. Rather new technologies are necessary for implementation of the smart grids. These must also focus on households, since these can be considered as a part of the complete system executives. So it is important that costumers understand their role and feel their involvement as an advantage for them. The base of the success lays on better relation between all business partners with particular respect to customers. The public opinion, probably one of the most important aspects in this transition to smart grids, can be influenced by not only media and marketing strategies of the energy providers, but also by a community as a whole. Since the economy and technology as well are still the priorities, consumers and communities should also be seen as one of the most crucial parts for successful implementation of smart grids.

Control Procedure of Emergency Calls for Femtocells

  • Pracoviště: Katedra telekomunikační techniky
  • Anotace:
Fourth generation (4G) of cellular wireless standards includes small base stations, located at individual buildings as homes or other separated areas, called femtocells. They provide higher transfer rate and level of received signal. These small and low-power cellular base stations can provide a wide-range of military applications – while they can easily be set for closed and from environment isolated areas (or buildings) such as headquarters, ships, airplanes, trains etc. [1]. This technology allows to extend service coverage indoors or at the edges where direct access would be unavailable or limited. The safe and secure internal communication and data exchange channels are offered with possibility of external (internet) connection. Several standards bodies, such as 3GPP, WiMAX Forum, and IEEE 802.16, have started to develop standard solutions to enable and optimize femtocells operation [2]. Despite of possible advantages of WiMAX solution [3] the whole technology is solved by 3GPP group, including emergency call cases. However, they are not described and published in deep detail for close subscriber group (CSG). The paper focuses on proposal of two control procedures which allow an access to CSG in the case of emergency calls.

Inversed Matrixes in Electric Circuits Parameters Estimation by Oriented Graphs

  • Pracoviště: Katedra telekomunikační techniky
  • Anotace:
The base of electric circuit analysis is often set up on numerical methods. When taking a look into the principle of any numerical method, a matrix calculus always rises out. The larger the problem is, the larger is the size of the matrix, representing the logical structure of the solved problem. The problem (especially from the mathematical point of view) is in acquiring the inverse matrix, which can be solved with some of a large scale of available numerical (or analytical; based on the size of matrixes) methods. This paper shows another possible approach to obtaining the inverse matrix. The graph theory has already been successfully used to invert the matrixes; although, the idea of evaluating the alternating paths, presented by authors, is completely new and had not been used before. The utilization of the designed procedure is demonstrated on a part of an analogue signal processing filter. This technology gives a new tool to software designers and could speed up the numerical solutions; or, in case of impossible analytical and/or diverge numerical technique can lead to a successful and reasonable solution.

Graph Based Inversed Matrix in Electric Circuits Solutions

  • Pracoviště: Katedra telekomunikační techniky
  • Anotace:
The matrix calculus is very frequently used in electrical engineering to calculate the different parameters of (but not only) electric circuits. One of the most important points of mathematical background of this analysis is the calculation of inverse matrix. This can be realised by numerous well-known algebraic methods (unit/identity matrix, different algebraic supplements, etc.) or numerical techniques. Inverting of matrixes is a well-known method; nevertheless, idea of alternating paths (presented in the paper) is completely new and unpublished. The electric circuit can be represented in the form of a graph and this graph structure rewritten into the form of matrixes. The paper shows the inverse matrix acquisition without using any algebraic technique - directly from graph structure. The presented technology can further be used as an input for any numerical method used for circuit parameters analysis or on- and off-line simulation. Practically, this is based on the following steps: the electric circuit is transformed into the graph structure. A new graph structure is created using the presented algorithm. The matrix system describing this graph structure, obtained without use of any conventional technique, is the inverse matrix of the original graph. The proposed utilization of alternative paths essentially differs from work of other authors.
