Platform F0-Lab including LEO (Little Embedded Oscilloscope) was designed and developed to substitute a professional set of instruments in experiments concerning electronics, measurement, and instrumentation. It is based on a microcontroller, which includes the sufficiently fast ADC. It enables to realize (in connection with PC) a simple DC voltmeter, a digitizing oscilloscope, a waveform recorder, and a PWM signal generator. The microcontroller can be placed in a solderless breadboard where the student realizes experimental circuits. The PC controls this virtual instrument, displaying results and supplying the power of the entire set using USB. F0-Lab is successfully used for three years and more than 300 various implementations have been already realized.

How to Support Interest in Engineering in Secondary Education

  • Anotace:
Two activities, how to increase interest in the study of electrical engineering and electronics, are described in the paper: workshops for teachers and participation in the Embedded Technology Club for students. Workshops for teachers acquaint them with the utilization of IT in a laboratory education, to make it more attractive and so to increase the interest of students to study natural sciences or engineering. The educational low-cost laboratory system and its applications in laboratories are presented during the workshop. The Embedded Technology Club (ETC) is a club intended as for students of secondary schools, who has an interest in electronics, as for other persons interested in this area. The business is focused both on education in the fundamentals of up-to-date design, development, and programming of electronic devices and solving some more simple projects concerning instrumentation. Activities are designed so that also students of secondary schools, who have no experience with electronics, but only basic knowledge in physics, can take part in. The priority is to have the interest to learn new things and to get hands-on experience.

  • Anotace:
The one-week intensive preparatory course “Practical Electronics” focused on measurement and instrumentation, which is designed especially for school-leavers of secondary schools (high schools in the USA), is described in the article. In many cases students, who are coming at the CTU in Prague, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, have only a vague idea of electronics despite they use electronic devices every day. The course is organized before the 1st semester and only basic secondary education in physics is supposed. It is divided between a theoretical part and a laboratory work. Each day starts with two hours lecture, where the actual laboratory work is explained. The following activities run in laboratories. A set of necessary components, solderless breadboard, connecting wires, and a low-cost multimeter are prepared for each student. While the 1st day is devoted to the connection of the simplest electric circuits and voltage measurements using a low-cost multimeter, the 2nd day starts with connecting of the virtual measuring instrument (VI) based on a microcontroller, which includes a simple DC voltmeter, a digitizing oscilloscope, and a pulse generator. It is used in tasks solved in the following part of the course.

Elektrická měření - Přístroje a metody

  • Pracoviště: Katedra měření
  • Anotace:

Progress in Study Programs at CTU – Faculty of Electrical Engineering 16 Years after the Bologna Declaration

  • Pracoviště: Katedra měření
  • Anotace:
Main changes in study programs at the Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU) based on the Bologna declaration were completed more than 10 years ago. The bachelor and master degree studies were strictly separated, and new separate study plans had to be worked out. It brought both advantages and disadvantages, and later it resulted in further changes in the study programs. The paper aims to show how CTU, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (CTU–FEE), has taken the advantage of the changes and how the disadvantages have been solved.

At present it relates especially to substitution of analogue signal processing by digital processing of sampled signal in a number of measuring instruments. The actual essential changes in the basic course of electrical measurement at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University (CTU) in Prague corresponding to this progress in last years are presented.

PRECISE SYNCHRONISATION IN INDUSTRIAL SYSTEM USING IEEE 1588 PRECISE TIME PROTOCOL

  • Pracoviště: Katedra měření
  • Anotace:
To increase the quality of synchronization in industrial distributed systems is a frequent demand at present. Node synchronization can be implemented in the Ethernet network using time protocols, e.g. IEEE 1588 Precise Time Protocol (PTP). However, active network components like switches and routers have negative influence on achieved accuracy of synchronization because they affect a packet delay variation in the network. To suppress this effect, special (but expensive) industrial switches, with a packet propagation delay correction, can be used. Another way using either low cost GPS receivers for synchronization of local clocks or a special timing for data transfer is described in the paper. It will allow a cheaper solution that preserves high quality of synchronization. Besides, a device for packet delay measurement (PTP tester) was designed and developed to be possible to evaluate the proposed methods.

Correction of ADC non-linearity can improve the accuracy of AD conversion. Except other possibilities the analytical inverse function of INL(n) curve can be applied. The first achieved result was published in [1]. Further simulations took into account also additive noise, jitter in sampling, non-zero sampled signal phase and hysteretic behavior of the ADC. The result of these imulations was published in [2]. Evaluation of the method using real data of several different AD modules is introduced in this paper.

Post-Correction of ADC Non-Linearity Using Integral Non-Linearity Curve

  • Publikace: International Journal of Computing. 2013, 12(1), 56-62. ISSN 1727-6209.
  • Rok: 2013

  • Anotace:
The accuracy of AD conversion can be improved using the post-correction of digitizer non-linearity. In principle two methods could be applied – look-up table or an analytical inverse function of integral non-linearity curve (INL(n)). Look-up table can be easily implemented but it demands huge memory space particularly for high resolution ADCs. Inverse function offers flexible solution for parameterization (e.g. frequency dependence) but it also requires fast DSP for real-time correction. The data or coefficients for both methods are frequently determined from a histogram of acquired pure sinusoidal signal. Non-linearity curve can also be gained by another procedure demanding significantly less samples – approximation from a frequency spectrum. The correction of ADC nonlinearity by means of inverse function of INL(n) curve is analyzed in this paper and the results are presented.

Changes in study programs at European universities based on Bologna declaration concern also the education in measurement and instrumentation (M&I). The bachelor and master stages are at the most of universities strictly separated in the new study plans, whilst only at some ones a so-called "integrated master program" arose. Study programs at a number of universities in continental Europe, where electrical engineering is taught, have been compared from the view of education in M&I. Whilst at the most of them the education in M&I is concerned to the bachelor study stage and one or two basic courses are offered, at several universities exist some additional specialized courses. Concerning master study stage, only some of the scanned universities offer separate specialization in M&I, the other universities offer some additional specialized courses only.

  • Anotace:
The performance of current devices is mostly limited by the analogue front-end and analogue-todigital converter's (ADC) imperfections. ADC performance is not, as commonly known, ideal. One of the most important parameters is the nonlinearity, which if it is known, can be corrected in the output data. The performance of three different approximations of ADC nonlinearity (common polynomials, Chebyshev polynomials and Fourier series) and achieved results concerning accuracy of approximations, noise sensitivity and nonlinearity correction are presented in the paper.

Several Approaches to ADC Transfer Function Approximation and their Application for ADC Non-Linearity Correction

  • Autoři: Suchánek, P., Slepička, D., prof. Ing. Vladimír Haasz, CSc.,
  • Publikace: Metrology and Measurement Systems. 2008, 15(4), 501-511. ISSN 0860-8229.
  • Rok: 2008
  • Pracoviště: Katedra měření
  • Anotace:
The performance of current electronic devices is mostly limited by analog front-end and analog-to-digital converter's (ADC) actual parameters. One of the most important parameters is ADC nonlinearity. The correction of this imperfection can be accomplished in the output data but only if the nonlinearity is well characterized. Many approaches to ADC characterization have been proposed in scientific articles in the last several years. In this paper three different approximations of ADC low-frequency non-linearity (common polynomials, Chebyshev polynomials and Fourier series) were analyzed and the practical applicability, approximation accuracy and noise sensitivity were investigated. The first results of nonlinearity correction were presented, too.

Influence of Test Signal Phase Noise on High-Resolution ADC Testing

  • Pracoviště: Katedra měření
  • Anotace:
The testing of high-resolution ADCs based on the majority of standardized methods requires pure sine-wave test signal. The reason of the requirement for signal's purity is that measured ADC parameters are potentially influenced by test signal imperfections such as distortion and wideband noise but also its short term frequency changes (phase noise). The influence of signal distortion and noise has already been the subject of many contributions; an analysis of phase noise, its effect on test results and possibilities of its suppression or correction are the subject of this paper. The validity of phase noise analysis and of proposed methods is also demonstrated on experimental measurements.

Posteriori Frequency Spectrum Correction for Test Signal Imperfections in ADC Testing at 1 MHz - Practical Experience

  • Autoři: prof. Ing. Vladimír Haasz, CSc., Slepička, D.
  • Publikace: 12th TC4 International Workshop on ADC Modelling and Testing. Iasi: CERMI Publishing House, 2007. pp. 68-72. ISBN 978-973-667-264-4.
  • Rok: 2007
  • Pracoviště: Katedra měření
  • Anotace:
In the last several years, many high-resolution and high-speed ADCs have appeared on the market. Since the signal purity of commercial generators particularly at MHz frequencies has not essentially increased in the same period, the problem of how to test ADCs has rose. This fact initiated the research of alternative methods based on either the application of special signals or posteriori correction of the measured sine-wave signal. The latter method concerning a simple correction in the frequency domain was already analyzed, extended and practically applied. The application and the results of this extended method at the frequency of 1 MHz are presented in this paper.

Practical Aspects of Dynamic ADC Testing in Frequency Range 1 to 20 MHz

  • Rok: 2006
  • Pracoviště: Katedra měření
  • Anotace:
There are two important issues that can arise during dynamic testing of digitisers - problem with impedance matching and disturbance in ground loops. The influence of correct termination of used filters is discussed in the first part of the paper. The ground-loop disturbance elimination is described in the second part of the paper. The ground-loop arose due to the fact that system devices are powered from one net supply with protective wire.

  • Pracoviště: Katedra měření
  • Anotace:
In the last years, universal measurement setup for high-resolution ADC testing at the frequency of 1 MHz was designed and prototyped at the Dept. of Measurement, CTU FEE. The experience and good measurement results initiated the extension of the system frequency range up to 20 MHz. In this paper, the extended measurement setup is introduced in two versions: low-cost version enabling the testing of 11-13 bit ADCs and high-quality version for the evaluation of even 20 bit ADCs.

Testing of Middle-resolution Digitisers at Input Signal Frequency of 1 MHz

  • Pracoviště: Katedra měření
  • Anotace:
A system for the testing of digitisers in the frequency range of 1 MHz was developed at the Dept. of Measurement, CTU FEE a few years ago. Two alternates of the system were manufactured - a precision design using special high-quality LC filters with a near-linear transfer characteristic and a low-cost design employing common LC filters using coils with ferromagnetic cores. Both alternates were used for testing several types of middle-resolution digitisers (12-18 bit).

  • Pracoviště: Katedra měření
  • Anotace:
A transportable high-stable reference AD device was designed and built for a comparison of systems for testing the dynamic quality of ADCs or AD modules. Three different input modules can be used in the frequency range up to 5 MHz. First, this paper refers to the results of an AD device application in the frequency range of the testing signal up to 100 kHz (comparison of four ADC testing systems in different laboratories, evaluation of a short time amplitude and/or frequency instability of testing signal generators). Second, it describes the first experience of its application in the frequency range from 100 kHz to 5 MHz.

System for the Testing of High-resolution ADCs at Frequency of 1 MHz

  • Pracoviště: Katedra měření
  • Anotace:
A system for the testing of ADCs at the frequency range of 1 MHz was designed and prototyped at the Dept. of Measurement, CTU FEE. Two methods were applied to suppress the influence of signal distortion: - Filtering by special high-quality filters with a near-linear transfer characteristic - Filtering by low-cost filters and the application of following numerical correction of residual distortion Low-cost as well as high-quality filters were manufactured. Experimental results showed that the method is directly applicable for the testing of ADCs with the ENOB up to 14 in case of low-cost filters and up to 20 in case of high-quality filters. An extension of the method for the testing of ADCs with hither ENOB can bring an application of the frequency spectrum correction method.

Testing of High-Resolution/Middle-Speed A/D Converters and Modules - Problems and Ways of Solving them

  • Pracoviště: Katedra měření
  • Anotace:
The paper describes basic methods for dynamic ADC testing and solution, how to improve a quality of basic testing methods to be possible to use them for dynamic testing high-resolution / middle speed AD converters and AD modules. The method, which combines a filtration of testing signal and a following digital correction, is described and proposed as the perspective one. The AD transfer standard, which is applied for an evaluation of testing methods and systems is also mentioned.

Comparative Measurements of Parameters of Systems Used for ADC Testing

Evaluation of ADC Testing Systems Using ADC Transfer Standard

Evaluation of ADC Testing Systems Using ADC Transfer Standard

  • Pracoviště: Katedra měření
  • Anotace:
A transportable high stable reference AD device was designed and built for a comparison od systems for testing of the dynamic quality of ADCs or AD modules. Three different input modules enable its use in the frequency range up to 5 MHz. First, this paper refers to the results of the AD device application in the frequency range of the testing signal up to 100 kHz (comparison of four ADC testing systems in different laboratories, evaluation of a short time amplitude and/or frequency instability of testing signal generators). Second, it describes the first experience of its application in the frequency range from 100 kHz to 5 MHz.

Evaluation of Short-Time Instability of Generators Used for ADC Testing

Evaluation of Short-Time Instability of Generators Used for ADC Testing

  • Pracoviště: Katedra měření
  • Anotace:
The quality of an evaluation of dynamic parameters of ADCs and AD modules is strongly dependent on the quality of testing signal generator. The most important parameters are the signal to noise ratio (SNR) and the spectral purity (THD). Besides, the short-time frequency and amplitude stability are also necessary to be considered, but it is often marginalized. However, they also influence the accuracy of the further evaluation. A possibility, how to estimate this imperfection, is presented in the paper.
