This paper presents an innovative concept of a high-speed and higher order adaptive filter. A fully analog artificial neural network handles the adaption by using a filter bank for filtering and learning through analog feedback inspired by backpropagation. There is no clock control used in this concept, which makes real-time adaption possible even for high frequencies. Its functionality is shown by several electrical circuit simulations involving component inaccuracies as well as a commonly used filter example.

A fully analogue implementation of training algorithms would speed up the training of artificial neural networks. A common choice for training the feedforward networks is the backpropagation with stochastic gradient descent. However, the circuit design that would enable its analogue implementation is still an open problem. This paper proposes a fully analogue training circuit block concept based on the backpropagation for neural networks without clock control. Capacitors are used as memory elements for the presented example. The XOR problem is used as an example for concept-level system validation.

Acute early vascular complications are rare, but serious complications after kidney transplantation. They often result in graft loss. For this reason, shortening the diagnostic process is crucial. Currently, it is standard procedure to monitor renal graft perfusion using Doppler ultrasound (DU). With respect to acute vascular complications, the main disadvantage of this type of examination is its periodicity. It would be of great benefit if graft blood perfusion could be monitored continuously during the early postoperative period. It appears evident that a well-designed near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) monitoring system could prove very useful during the early post-transplantation period. Its role in the immediate diagnosis of vascular complications could result in a significant increase in graft salvage, thus improving the patient's overall quality of life and lowering morbidity and mortality for renal graft recipients. The aim of this study was to design, construct and test such a monitoring system. We designed a rough NIRS-based system prototype and prepared a two-stage laboratory experiment based on a laboratory pig model. In the first stage, a total of 10 animals were used to verify and optimize the technical aspects and functionality of the prototype sensor by testing it on the animal kidneys in-vivo. As a result of these tests, a more specific prototype was designed. During the second stage, we prepared a unique laboratory model of a pig kidney autotransplantation and tested the system for long-term functionality on a group of 20 animals. Overall sensitivity and specificity were calculated, and a final prototype was prepared and completed with its own analytic software and chassis. We designed and constructed a NIRS-based system for kidney graft perfusion monitoring. The measurement system provided reliable performance and 100% sensitivity when detecting acute diminished blood perfusion of the transplanted kidneys in laboratory conditions.

This paper presents utility for the design of the cross-coupled charge pump, which is used for supplying peripherals with low current consumption on the chip, such as the EEPROM or FLASH memories. The article summarizes the knowledge in the field of the theoretical and practical analysis of the cross-coupled charge pump Design relationships and their connection with the pump parameters, as the threshold voltage, power supply voltage, clock signal frequency, etc., are applicated in the design algorithm. Optimal MOSFETs sizes (W, L) were found based on the time response characteristics of the pump sub-block. The goals include both maximize the voltage increase in the active interval of the clock signal and minimizing of the pump losses, as the switch reverse current, inverter cross current, etc.

Development of Low-Cost Solder Paste Hand Dispenser

  • Pracoviště: Katedra elektrotechnologie, Katedra teorie obvodů
  • Anotace:
In prototyping and piece-production, stencil printing of the solder paste is expensive, and with the use of the stencil, it is not possible to react fast on changes in the design. Therefore, automatic or manual dispensers are used. This work aimed to develop a low-cost dispensing system based on a simple principle that uses torsion springs and its plastic construction is printable by a 3D printer. Unlike other dispensing systems, the presented dispenser allows continuous deposition of the solder paste. As the performance test showed, the deposition can be as good as with a commercial dispenser. Furthermore, the cost of the dispenser does not exceed 1€. In comparison with other commercial solutions, it is a negligible amount.

This paper presents the computional algorithm that is used for prediction of the cross-coupled charge pump static and dynamic properties. The calculation method is based on the state-space model of the charge pump for each phase of the clock signal. State equations are drawn from the symbolic relationships of the pump stage as an analog functional block using BSIM equations for long channel MOSFET. The algorithm was programmed in Maple SW and calculated values were compared with transistor-level circuit characteristics. The analysis results show high accuracy of the mentioned method, which allow to reflect many real effects compared to the equivalent digital model description. The algorithm will be used for synthesis procedure together with the application of formulae for optimal design circuit without long-time simulation process.

This paper presents a dynamic part of the pump stage model of the cross-coupled charge pump. The complex model has been used for both the estimation of the N -stage pump properties in a wide range of the input parameters and derivation of equations for synthesis process, as the main capacitor sizing, which is also mentioned in the article. Dynamic part of the model (pump stage capacitances) is determined from Ward’s capacitance piece-wise model through the BSIM MOSFET model equations. Main capacitor and load capacitor sizing are based on the time response characteristics fulfilling the system behavior in time. Guideline on the MOS transistor sizing as the nonlinear main pump capacitor and specification of the diode transistor for the design process are also clarified. The characteristics of the proposed circuit have been verified in the professional design environment Mentor graphics and analysis algorithm based on the state-space description of the inner complex model was programmed in Maple SW. The main benefit is to offer the alternative way of the charge pump synthesis by using the complex model and symbolic description of all formulae to find the required pump parameters without long-time simulation process.

New Variant of a Negative 4-phase Charge Pump

  • Pracoviště: Katedra teorie obvodů
  • Anotace:
Charge pump (CP) is a micropower alternative to conventional DC/DC converters. CPs have a small size and an easier integrability than conventional DC/DC converters. Nowadays, CPs became an integral part of low-voltage integrated circuits that contain some blocks with specific voltages. An example is non-volatile memories (Flash) that use programming voltage a greater than 10 V, but these circuits use power supply voltage about 1 V. Thus, these systems must integrate a positive CP that increases power supply voltage to an appropriate programming voltage. Required voltage gain of a CP can be decreased with a usage of modified programming scheme [1] that is based on negative bias. This paper is concentrated on a new concept of negative CP and comparison of this new concept with standard Dickson Charge Pump (DCP). The key parameters as voltage gain, rise time, number of elements, chip area and efficiency are compared by simulations executed by Mentor Graphics.

  • Anotace:
A class of computer-aided optimization methods based on Differential Evolution (DE), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Nelder Mead algorithms applied to a switched-capacitor (SC) filter circuit design are investigated. Comparisons of these algorithms applied to a 4th order biquadratic two-channel filter bank CMOS design on 0. 35 μm technology are made. The frequency responses of the biquadratic filters must match ideal responses in a finite number of iterations with a limited number of ”particles”. The original and derived methods are evaluated on the base of their convergence progress and their reliability over different starting populations. An optimal design approach based on combining algorithms is derived as a more suitable and more reliable method for SC circuit optimization.

  • Anotace:
This paper presents the circuit model that is used for the cross-coupled charge pump design algorithm. Symbolic description of the pump stage model as an analog functional block for high-voltage application is firstly discussed. Design process has been done by using simplified BSIM model equations assuming the long channel MOSFET. Characteristics have been verified by ELDO Spice and compared with the found relationships. Static and dynamic parameters of the subcircuit have been tested in two-stages structure by LT Spice simulator. Analysis results show the consistency between model and real circuits characteristics under given conditions. Complex model provides the reliable results for significantly smaller strange capacitances in comparision with the main pump capacitances. The model can be used for design and prediction of the pump parameters without long-time simulation process. The strong inversion region of MOSFET is expected, thus equations are correct for other MOSFET models that are used in chip design (PSP).

  • Odkaz: https://doi.org/10.13164/re.2017.0781
  • Pracoviště: Katedra teorie obvodů
  • Anotace:
This paper presents a symbolic description of the design process of the switch transistors for the cross-coupled charge pump applications. Discrete-time analog circuits are usually designed by the numerical algorithms in the professional simulator software which can be an extremely time-consuming process in contrast to described analytical procedure. The significant part of the pumping losses is caused by the reverse current through the switch transistors due to the continuous-time voltage change on the main capacitors. The design process is based on the analytical expression of the time response characteristics of the pump stage as an analog system with using BSIM model equations. The main benefit of the article is the analytical transistors sizing formula so that the maximum voltage gain is achieved. The diode transistor is dimensioned for the pump requirements, as the maximal pump output ripple voltage, current, etc. The characteristics of the proposed circuit have been verified by simulation in ELDO Spice. Results are valid for N-stage charge pump and also applicable for other model equations as PSP, EKV.

Discontinuity of the output voltage through input parameters is very important finding that complicates the development of the real model for design purposes.

Design Rules of the CMOS Inverter for Voltage Converters

  • Pracoviště: Katedra teorie obvodů
  • Anotace:
This paper presents a description of the dominant characteristics of the CMOS inverter, which is used for voltage converters–charge pumps applications. This circuit controls transport charge between main capacitors to create a higher DC voltage. The significant part of the pump losses is caused by the inverter cross current. This current flows through the inverter in transition state and discharges the capacitor, therefore decreases the pump voltage gain. The CMOS inverter design is based on the analog block description for high-voltage integrated circuits using BSIM model equations. The main benefit of this article is derivated analytical relationship between width and length of the NMOS and PMOS transistors to achieve the static power minimization. The derivation has been performed based on the sensitivity analysis. The design relationship are applicable to the other MOSFET models, as EKV. The characteristic of the proposed circuit has been verified by simulation in ELDO Spice. Analysis results show that the cross current is reduced by ten times in comparison with the value of the standard digital inverter (with symmetrical voltage transfer characteristics). This improvement was achieved while keeping relatively large area of both transistors satisfying the dynamic properties.

This paper presents a simple procedure for design of the filter-bank with Wave digital filter (WDF). The filter-bank is constructed using Chebyshev and Inverse Chebyshev filters. Wave digital filters are derived from LC filters and consist of cascade connections of serial and parallel adapters. These adapters contains the necessary adders, multipliers and inverters. A great advantage of this procedure is that the filters in the wave digital filterbank synthesis are obtained from the wave digital filter-bank analysis only by changing some signs in the end of delay elements.

This paper deals with the design and optimization of biquadratic switched capacitor filters for 4th order quadrature-mirror filter banks allowing for real switch effects (e.g. on-state resistance, charge injection...) and the folded cascode OpAmp designed in 0.35 um CMOS technology. The filter is designed as a cascade of two biquads and each filter is separately optimized using the Differential Evolution Algorithm to obtain the required transfer function with deviation of less than ±0.1 dB from the designed transfer function. The filters process a baseband signals (0 - 8 kHz) using a clock frequency of 16 kHz. The resulting capacitor values are presented.

In the context of the digital filter design, a great deal of research has been done to facilitate their computation. The Pascal matrix defined in [1], [2] has provided its utility in this field. In this paper we summarize the direct transformation from low-pass continuous-time transfer function H(s) to discrete-time H(z) of the bandpass and bandstop transfer functions. This algorithm uses the Pascal matrix and is constructed from the rows of a Pascal triangle. The advantage of this method is that the inverse transformation is obtained with the Pascal matrix without computing the determinant of the system, which simplifies the process to obtain the associated analog transfer function H(s) if the discrete transfer function H(z) is known. Numerical example for matrices P, P1, Q and Q1 illustrate the practical utilization of this technique.

Implementation of a Two-Channel Maximally Decimated Filter Bank using Switched Capacitor Circuits

  • Pracoviště: Katedra teorie obvodů
  • Anotace:
The aim of this paper is to describe the implementation of a two-channel filter bank (FB) using the switched capacitor (SC) technique considering real properties of operational amplifiers (OpAmps). The design procedure is presented and key recommendations for the implementation are given. The implementation procedure describes the design of two-channel filter bank using an IIR Cauer filter, conversion of IIR into the SC filters and the final implementation of the SC filters. The whole design and an SC circuit implementation is performed by a PraCAn package in Maple. To verify the whole filter bank, resulting real property circuit structures are completely simulated by WinSpice and ELDO simulators. The results confirm that perfect reconstruction conditions can be almost accepted for the filter bank implemented by the SC circuits. The phase response of the SC filter bank is not strictly linear due to the IIR filters. However, the final ripple of a magnitude frequency response in the passband is almost constant, app. 0.5 dB for a real circuit analysis.

Developing Model-Based Design Evaluation for Pipelined A/D Converters

  • Pracoviště: Katedra teorie obvodů
  • Anotace:
This paper deals with a prospective approach of modeling, design evaluation and error determination applied to pipelined A/D converter architecture. In contrast with conventional ADC modeling algorithms targeted to extract the maximum ADC non-linearity error, the innovative approach presented allows to decompose magnitudes of individual error sources from a measured or simulated response of an ADC device. Design Evaluation methodology was successfully applied to Nyquist rate cyclic converters in our works [13]. Now, we extend its principles to pipelined architecture. This qualitative decomposition can significantly contribute to the ADC calibration procedure performed on the production line in term of integral and differential nonlinearity. This is backgrounded by the fact that the knowledge of ADC performance contributors provided by the proposed method helps to adjust the values of on-chip converter components so as to equalize (and possibly minimize) the total non-linearity error. In this paper, the design evaluation procedure is demonstrated on a system design example of pipelined A/D converter. Significant simulation results of each stage of the design evaluation process are given, starting from the INL performance extraction proceeded in a powerful Virtual Testing Environment implemented in Maple™ software and finishing by an error source simulation, modeling of pipelined ADC structure and determination of error source contribution, suitable for a generic process flow.

Techniky implementace banky filtrů pomocí SC obvodů

  • Pracoviště: Katedra teorie obvodů
  • Anotace:

  • Anotace:
The paper describes a new method for the suppression of the common mode interference, which is commonly present in biopotential measurements. The newly suggested method uses known principle of feedback for active common mode signal rejection. In addition, the proposed system reduces problems with potential instability, and introduces less overall instrumental noise.

Analysis and Synthesis of the Digital Structures by the Matrix Method

  • Pracoviště: Katedra teorie obvodů
  • Anotace:
This paper presents a general matrix algorithm for analysis of digital filters. The method proposed in this paper allows not only the analysis of the digital filters, but also the construction of new structures of the canonic or non-canonic digital filter. Equivalent filters of different structures can be found according to various matrix expansions. The structures can be calculated even from transfer function or from state-space matrices and with the additional advantage of requiring minimum number of hifting elements. Traditional research methods are not able to construct the system with a minimum of the shifting operations.

However, the listed requirements are satisfied by evolutionary algorithms (EAs). Several methods belong in EAs, the differential evolution, genetic algorithms, etc. The chapter is focused on the optimization and design of analog filters using differential evolution. Usually, component values are necessary to be determined to meet given requirements (filter characteristics). Analog filters can be implemented by two basic ways - continuous-time and discrete-time circuits. There is shown methods based on EAs for the design and optimization of the both types of filter implementation in this chapter.

This paper describes a way to eliminate the effect of circuit nonidealities on the magnitude frequency response of a circuit utilizing the switched-current technique. The circuit realizes a band-pass filter. The elimination is carried out by optimization based on one of evolutionary algorithms - the differential evolution. The nonidealities are nonzero on-state resistance of the switches and nonzero output conductance of the field-effect transistors implementing the current sources. It is shown that the filter with the current source transconductance values designed according to a common method for ideal components has a significantly different magnitude frequency response when the nonidealities are considered. Hence, the optimization is applied to finding suitable transconductance values so that the difference between the magnitude frequency responses of the ideal and nonideal filter is minimized.

The first part of the contribution concerns significant properties of two proposed VTE algorithm implementations, the first one employing Verilog-A behavioral module and the second which is created in Maple environment with built-in libraries for circuit analysis. The performance of both VTE implementations is evaluated at system-level and by simulation of residual non-linearity with an ideal ADC model.

Ways to Optimize Analogue Switched Circuits

  • Pracoviště: Katedra teorie obvodů
  • Anotace:
This paper describes how analogue switched circuits can be optimized by means of a personal computer. Their optimization is not so common and their analysis is more difficult in comparison with continuously working circuits. Firstly, the nonidealities occurring in these circuits whose effect on their characteristics should be optimized are discussed. Then a few ways to analyze these circuits are shown. From all applicable optimization algorithms, two ones seeming to be the most promising are proposed. The differential evolution combined with the simplex method was found to be best. Two types of programs are required for the optimization: for implementing calculations of the used optimization algorithm and for the analysis of the optimized circuit. Several computer programs from both of the groups together with their proper settings according to authors' experience are proposed. At the end of the paper, an example of a switched-current circuit optimization is presented.

Our work proposes a prospective approach for non-linearity extraction of analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) based on the simulation of ADCs. The testing engine is implemented in MAPLE and consists of program procedures for extracting ADC errors expressed in term of integral and differential non-linearity (INL and DNL). As the performance extraction algorithms we use the Servo-Loop and Histogram method. In our work, we deal with the Nyquist-rate ADCs, and in particular with converters employing the successive approximation technique. The novelty of our solution is the use of effective search algorithms and improved convergence properties, significantly accelerating the conversion.

Switched-Capacitor Filter Optimization with Respect to Switch On-State Resistance and Features of Real Operational Amplifiers

  • Pracoviště: Katedra teorie obvodů
  • Anotace:
The paper describes the optimization of a switched-capacitor filter. The aim of the optimization is to obtain a required magnitude frequency response of the filter by means of the differential evolution. An optimal dynamic range is to be achieved too. The optimization takes into account both one of the features of real switches - on-state resistance, and the features of real operational amplifiers - finite voltage gain and finite unity-gain bandwidth. Other main features of real operational amplifiers (input and output resistance) have small effect. The filter with ideal switches and operational amplifiers is designed by the usual way at first. The analysis of this filter with real switches and operational amplifiers shows a significant difference between its magnitude frequency response and the one with ideal components. Thus, the optimization is applied to finding component values for the response to be as similar to the one with ideal components as possible.

Switched-Current Filter Optimization Based on Evolutionary Algorithms

  • Pracoviště: Katedra teorie obvodů
  • Anotace:

Using the Differential Evolution Algorithm for the Multi-Objective Optimization of a Switched-Current Circuit

  • Publikace: Proceedings of IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation 2007. Piscataway: IEEE, 2007. p. 1351-1358. ISBN 1-4244-1340-0.
  • Rok: 2007
  • Pracoviště: Katedra teorie obvodů
  • Anotace:
This paper describes the optimization of a switched-current circuit applied to low-pass filter realization. The optimization uses the differential evolution - one of evolutionary algorithms. The optimization takes into account three requirements, so it is multi-objective optimization. The first requirement is the elimination of the effect of nonidealities in the circuit on its magnitude frequency response. The nonidealities are the nonzero output conductance of the field-effect transistors realizing the current sources and nonzero switch on-state resistance. The second and third fact respected by the optimization is concerned with the values of transconductances of the transistors in the circuit. The ratio between the highest and lowest one and their sum should be as small as possible. The reason is a better circuit design. The aim of the optimization is to obtain suitable values of the transconductances satisfying the three requirements.

Design of Dual Bandpass and Bandreject LC Ladder Filters

  • Pracoviště: Katedra teorie obvodů
  • Anotace:
This paper deals with the design of two-passband bandpass and two-stopband bandreject LC ladder filters. The design method is based on the special dual frequency transformation that transforms normalized lowpass to either bandpass with two passbands or to bandreject with two stopbands that are specified by four cutoff frequencies. The paper shows analytical solution relating these four cutoff frequencies to parameters of dual frequency transformation. It enables a direct computation of dual band LC filter elements from a normalized lowpass filter by means of simple relations. These relations have been implemented in the mathematical program Maple (TM) as new user functions. They are supposed to be used as an enhancement of Syntfil package which is intended for analog filter design in program Maple. Specific application is shown on an example of the two-passband bandpass LC filter design.

  • Anotace:
This paper deals with the optimization of a filter (biquadratic section) employing switched-capacitor technique with respect to real features of switches, concretely their onstate resistance. At first, the conventional design of the filter with ideal switches is carried out. The filter designed in this way is then analyzed while using switches with nonzero onstate resistance. It is shown that this resistance affects the frequency response of the circuit not negligible. Therefore, component values are adjusted so that the frequency response of the filter approximates the original one with using ideal switches as much as possible. Achieving an optimal dynamic range is also taken into account. An optimization algorithm based on the differential evolution is applied for this purpose.

Optimization of Dynamic Range of Cascade Filter Realization

  • Pracoviště: Katedra teorie obvodů
  • Anotace:
This paper deals with a dynamic range optimization procedure for active filters based on the cascade realization. Dynamic characteristics of the cascade filter depend on many factors, mainly on pole-zero pairing, section ordering and gain assignment. Just the procedure for an optimal gain assignment for particular biquadratic sections is discussed in this paper. The input parameters of the procedure are parameters of particular biquads i.e. pole frequency omega0, quality factor Q, eventually zero frequency omegan for elliptic section and the transfer function type of the section. The gain is distributed so that output signal limitation of particular biquads occurs for the same level of the filter input signal. The procedure is versatile - can be used for analog as well as for digital filters with the cascade structure. The presented algorithm is fully universal (does not suppose any simplification). It has been used in Syntfil package for the filter design in the program Maple.

This text deals with a design of crossover filters with respect to a complete loudspeaker equivalent circuit. Equivalent circuits are mentioned - both a simple one and a detailed one. A two-way crossover filter design follows. Firstly, they are designed with component values calculated according to common formulas, including using a usual circuit compensating the loudspeaker inductance. Then the difference between the frequency responses of the crossover filters with the simple equivalent circuit and the detailed one is found out. In case of both the difference is not small. Thus, a modification of the compensating circuit for the low band is made. An optimization based on an evolutionary algorithm is used to obtain component values. The high band circuit remains the same, only component values are changed, also by the optimization algorithm. The resulting crossover filter frequency responses are only a little different from the desired.
