Terrains are visually prominent and commonly needed objects in many computer graphics applications. While there are many algorithms for synthetic terrain generation, it is rather difficult to assess the realism of a generated output. This article presents a first step toward the direction of perceptual evaluation for terrain models. We gathered and categorized several classes of real terrains, and we generated synthetic terrain models using computer graphics methods. The terrain geometries were rendered by using the same texturing, lighting, and camera position. Two studies on these image sets were conducted, ranking the terrains perceptually, and showing that the synthetic terrains are perceived as lacking realism compared to the real ones. We provide insight into the features that affect the perceived realism by a quantitative evaluation based on localized geomorphology-based landform features (geomorphons) that categorize terrain structures such as valleys, ridges, hollows, and so forth. We show that the presence or absence of certain features has a significant perceptual effect. The importance and presence of the terrain features were confirmed by using a generative deep neural network that transferred the features between the geometric models of the real terrains and the synthetic ones. The feature transfer was followed by another perceptual experiment that further showed their importance and effect on perceived realism. We then introduce Perceived Terrain Realism Metrics (PTRM), which estimates human-perceived realism of a terrain represented as a digital elevation map by relating the distribution of terrain features with their perceived realism. This metric can be used on a synthetic terrain, and it will output an estimated level of perceived realism. We validated the proposed metrics on real and synthetic data and compared them to the perceptual studies.

As the popularity of Smart Televisions (TVs) and interactive Smart TV applications (apps) has recently grown, the usability of these apps has become an important quality characteristic. Previous studies examined Smart TV apps from a usability perspective. However, these methods are mainly manual, and the potential of automated model-based testing methods for usability testing purposes has not yet been fully explored. In this article, we propose an approach to test the usability of Smart TV apps based on the automated generation of a Smart TV user interaction model from an existing app by a specialized automated crawler. By means of this model, defined user tasks in the Smart TV app can be evaluated automatically in terms of their feasibility and estimated user effort, which reflects the usability of the analyzed app. This analysis can be applied in the context of regular users and users with various specific needs. The findings from this model-based automated analysis approach can be used to optimize the user interface of a Smart TV app to increase its usability, accessibility, and quality.

This chapter presents a design process for developing a conversational navigation agent for visually impaired pedestrians where communication runs in natural language. This approach brings a lot of new problems with opportunity to solve them in nontraditional ways. The conversation with the agent is an example of a problem-solving process with several complex parts of the solution needed to be executed by the user. The user can ask additional questions about each part of the solution, thus adaptively changing the level of detail of information acquired, or to alternate the whole process to fit user preferences. In this way, the agent can replace a human navigator. Using this design process exemplar, we provide guidance on creating similar conversational agents, which utilize a natural language user interface. The guidance is supported by the results of several experiments conducted with participants with visual impairments.

Visual impairment limits a person mainly in the ability to move freely and independently. Even with many navigation aids and tools currently on the market, almost one-third of the visually impaired do not travel alone without a guide. One of the most useful aids are the landmark-enhanced itineraries of the route created by orientation and mobility specialists. We describe the design of a system, which is based on a specific, efficiently collected geographical data, and which automatically generates human-like landmark-enhanced itineraries for navigation of visually impaired users. The studies we conducted (quantitative n = 16, qualitative n = 6) showed usability and efficiency of the system. We also provide a set of design recommendations to increase the usability of the system along with specific examples of usage of particular landmarks. Moreover, we report on 14-day long diary study (n = 3) where visually impaired participants used the system freely throughout the city center with a success rate of 84% without using GPS. Finally, based on an over-the-phone survey (n = 18), we provide a methodology to identify the essential area, where geographical data needs to be collected to enable visually impaired pedestrians to travel around the city center efficiently.

VIRTUAL REALITY IN CARE FOR OLDER ADULTS

  • Pracoviště: Katedra počítačové grafiky a interakce
  • Anotace:
Older adults gradually lose their physical and psychical abilities, and they have to get accustomed to this fact. This situation causes certain discomfort for these people and question arises how to make their life easier to minimize the discomfort. One of the possible solutions is to provide them with training by means of which they can acquire new skills that may ideally compensate their inabilities to a satisfactory extent. In this paper, we will discuss possibilities how to employ new information technologies allowing to simulate the virtual interaction of the person in various environments. The use of these technologies also allows personalization, i.e., taking into account the abilities of individual users that suffer from a particular handicap. Moreover, these technologies make possible to train people for new situations in new environments in advance, before they occur there physically, for instance, to train them for operating new devices in the household, etc. The goal of this paper is to attract the attention of people who work in institutions where care for older adults is provided to new methods that in principle can increase the comfort of older adults together with allowing caregivers to increase quality and efficiency of their work. The technology cannot replace human caregivers, but it should provide them with new possibilities in the process when older adults are treated.

Complex and sophisticated projects, on which information technologists and artists meet and cooperate, often require an understanding of possible problems and solutions seen from both sides. While artists (creators) are usually somewhat familiar with current technologies, e.g. the Computer Graphics (CG) field, programmers are not well educated in the arts and their understanding of artistic needs is thus insufficient. In order to improve the education of CG students towards fine arts, we have created a BSc course on Art and Graphics design and have been running it for seven years. We consider this approach to education at a technologically oriented university as unusual and rare, but highly valuable for CG students. This paper describes the content of the course, summarizes the experience gained, and evaluates its usefulness for CG students in the subsequent MSc study program.

SENIOŘI A JEJICH KOMUNIKACE SE ZAŘÍZENÍMI V PROSTŘEDÍ INFORMAČNÍCH TECHNOLOGIÍ

  • Pracoviště: Katedra počítačové grafiky a interakce
  • Anotace:

This chapter shows how elements of gamification, i.e. game thinking and game mechanics, can be integrated into a collaborative navigation system for visually impaired persons in order encourage them to travel independently and thus improve their quality of life and self-confidence. The system supports independent navigation in unknown places by mediating help from another visually impaired person, who is familiar with the particular place. Our system utilizes a thermal user interface to introduce an additional communication channel and thus to increase the usability of the system. The system has been successfully enhanced by game elements and illustrates the potential of introducing game elements into these systems.

A chess game is very popular also for visually impaired players. To some extent we can see similarities to blindfold chess game of sighted players. However blindfold chess is played by master players only. Thus blind beginners are facing demanding conditions for playing chess. We started with initial observation of a game play of blind chess players and indicated signs of using mental images, limits in learning efficient chess play, or accessibility problems. We extracted 114 findings from the semi-structured interviews conducted with 5 blind advanced chess players. Based on these findings we propose directions for future research and development.

Collaborative navigation of visually impaired

A navigation system for visually impaired users can be much more efficient if it is based on collaboration among visually impaired persons and on utilising distributed knowledge about the environment in which the navigation task takes place. To design a new system of this kind, it is necessary to make a study of communication among visually impaired users while navigating in a given environment and on their regularly walked routes. A qualitative study was conducted to gain insight into the issue of communication among visually impaired persons while they are navigating in an unknown environment, and our hypotheses were validated by a quantitative study with a sample of 54 visually impaired respondents. A qualitative study was conducted with 20 visually impaired participants aimed at investigating regularly walked routes used by visually impaired persons. The results show that most visually impaired users already collaborate on navigation, and consider an environment description from other visually impaired persons to be adequate for safe and efficient navigation. It seems that the proposed collaborative navigation system is based on the natural behaviour of visually impaired persons. In addition, it has been shown that a network of regularly walked routes can significantly expand the urban area in which visually impaired persons are able to navigate safely and efficiently.

User interfaces (UI) of software applications play a crucial part in communication with users. Attractive UIs often lead to market success, and thus there is a significant incentive to provide users with malleable UIs that can adapt as much as possible to their needs. However, such UIs require significant development and maintenance efforts. In this paper, we describe a context model based on ability-based design that is well suited to the purposes of automated UI generation. We then introduce a platform that delivers adaptive UIs across various platforms. We use runtime combinatoric optimisation to support usability and to generate context-sensitive UIs. Since the development and maintenance of such UIs can be complex, our platform integrates a module for code-inspection for data-oriented applications to reduce these efforts. It also utilises a visual editor to simplify manual UI design.

User behavior is significantly influenced by the surrounding environment. Especially complex and dynamically changing environments (like mobile environment) are represented by a wide variety of extraneous variables, which influence the user behavior in an unpredictable and mostly uncontrolled way. For researchers, it is challenging to measure and analyze the user behavior in such environments. We introduce a complex tool-the IVE tool-which provides a unique way of context visualization and synchronization of measured data of various kinds. Thanks to this tool it is possible to efficiently evaluate data acquired during complex usability tests in a mobile environment. The functionality of this tool is demonstrated on the use case "Navigation of visually impaired users in the building with support of a navigation system called NaviTerier." During the experiment, we focused on collection and analysis of data that may show user stress and which may influence his/her ability to n

Turn-taking and turn-yielding phenomena in dialogs receive increasing attention nowadays. A growing number of spoken dialog systems inspire application designers to humanize people’s interaction experience with computers. The knowledge of psychology in discourse structure could be helpful in this effort. In this paper the authors explore effectiveness of selected visual and vocal turn-yielding cues in dialog systems using synthesized speech and an avatar. The aim of this work is to detect the role of visual and vocal cues on dialog turn-change judgment using a conversational agent. The authors compare and study the cues in two experiments. Findings of those experiments suggest that the selected visual turn-yielding cues are more effective than the vocal cues in increasing correct judgment of dialog turn-change. Vocal cues in the experiment show quite poor results and the conclusion discusses possible explanations of that.

This paper introduces a framework for adaptive user interface (UI) development. Our framework facilitates development and maintenance efforts through code inspection. Information already captured elsewhere is reused in the UI rather than restated. In our approach, inspected information is transformed in multiple stages through an aspect-oriented approach. As each stage may be influenced at runtime, our approach allows systems to be built with context-aware adaptive UIs. In addition, the selection of UI elements and their layout is generated using optimal metrics. The output of our approach can be influenced by the target platform. Our approach to UI is shown in detail in a case study.

Simulation Of Patient Data Monitoring

Patient data monitoring is in general very complicated tasks, which should take into account needs of multiple types of patient. However, complex verification of such processes is not feasible to evaluate with real users. Goal of VERITAS project is to provide a framework for simulation of virtual users in virtual environment in order to investigate potential behavior of various types of users. Virtual users were created based on measurements of parameters of real persons. The simulation shows the patient data both as qualitative and quantitative data. Based on the results, the monitoring processes may be optimized.

Cílem projektu bylo navrhnout uživatelské rozhraní digitální televize připojené přes Internet (IPTV) pro cílovou skupinu seniorů a vyvinout odpovídající prototyp spustitelný na běžně do‐stupných set‐top boxech. Vzhledem ke skutečnosti, že poskytovatelé IPTV často nabízejí velké množství různých televizních stanic, zaměřili jsme se na vyhledávání a správu pořadů, namísto klasického přístupu přes kanály. Před samotným návrhem uživatelského rozhraní jsme provedli uživatelský výzkum formou hloubkových rozhovorů, dotazníků a ohniskové skupiny s celkem 97 seniory. Uživatelský výzkum nám umožnil lépe porozumět potřebám uživatele a definovat budoucí funkcionalitu prototypu.

This strategy is demonstrated on three virtual keyboards operated by hissing - a novel interaction method suitable for severely motor impaired people with speech impairments. An experiment with 39 users was conducted to compare the keyboards to three existing scanning keyboards. The participants were able to enter a text by hissing at the speed of 10-16 characters per minute. Experiment results have also shown that a scanning strategy must be predictable for the users as they need to plan their actions in advance.

Evaluation of application accessibility is a challenging task that requires an intensive testing with potential application users. An alternative to user tests is the model based testing using simulations. The simulations provide important feedback about application accessibility particularly when it is hard to involve the target users in the tests which is often the case for users with disabilities. In this paper we propose a methodology of providing the quickly and easily necessary data for the simulations. In particular we show how to annotate task models using application walkthroughs logs that is data obtained by recording the application usage. We create annotated task models, which together with the user models are suitable for simulation of application usage by virtual users with various disabilities. We present tools for recording and processing of the application walkthrough logs and tools for the interactive task model annotation. Finally, we provide actual examples of task model annotation on three scenarios involving the Second Life metaverse.

This paper presents Humsher -- a novel text entry method operated by the non-verbal vocal input, specifically the sound of humming. The method utilizes an adaptive language model for text prediction. Four different user interfaces are presented and compared. Three of them use dynamic layout in which n-grams of characters are presented to the user to choose from according to their probability in given context. The last interface utilizes static layout, in which the characters are displayed alphabetically and a modified binary search algorithm is used for an efficient selection of a character. All interfaces were compared and evaluated in a user study involving 17 able-bodied subjects.

The vision-impaired people manage to cover most of their everyday needs with the help of technological equipment. Some needs, however, still require special attention: For example, commonly used pregnancy tests provide results that may be interpreted only visually. The users of these tests who are vision-impaired are dependent on a help of a sighted person which is a drastic invasion of users' privacy. This paper proposes a solution to this problem: A design of a prototype of a system allowing the vision-impaired users to interpret the results of a pregnancy test using a PC with scanner is presented and evaluated.

UI Generation for Data Visualisation in Heterogenous Environment

  • Pracoviště: Katedra počítačové grafiky a interakce
  • Anotace:
The process of data visualisation can be very complex and an urgent need for interactive control of this process is imminent. Solution to this problem is in the field of user interfaces by means of which the user can efficiently control all aspects of the visualisation. One of the fields where a lot of challenges for development of new user interfaces exist is data visualisation in heterogeneous environment. In such case data are visualised on various devices that have different capabilities. This fact influences not only the results of the visualisation process but also design and implementation of user interface for each particular device. In situation when an application is capable to run on various devices it is rather problematic to manually create individual user interfaces, one for each device. In this paper a concept and results of automatic generation of user interfaces in a heterogeneous environment is described.

In this paper we give an overview of the development of usability activities in the Czech Republic. We start with the historical background - in terms of general context in which usability issues were born in this country - and then we describe specific usability issues that are typical for the usability community in this country. Special attention is paid to mutual links between research at universities and industrial activities in various companies active in the Czech Republic. There exists a mutual cross-fertilization between these two activities that results in a fruitful cooperation between both sectors. This fact is demonstrated in this paper by several projects that ran in last a few years. Last but not the least the importance of cooperation between research and education at universities has been stressed. In such a way students come in touch with up-to-date research problems and get an opportunity to participate in the leading-edge research in this country.

User Interface and Workflow Platform

  • Pracoviště: Katedra počítačové grafiky a interakce
  • Anotace:
Multiple attempts [1-5] to use automatic user interface generation were performed, but none of them is widely adopted. The main issues of design and implementation are the overall complexity of input (input models) to the user interface generators, platform dependency, and corresponding poor scalability. From users' perspective, automatically generated user interfaces often look too artificial, form-like and over-complicated. Current methods of the automatic design do not allow the developers to explicitly specify the importance of individual elements of the input model and the desired "look and feel" of the resulting user interface. The former problem does not allow the user interface generators to construct the user interface where the elements are positioned based on their actual importance or even omitted (e.g due to screen size constraints). The latter problem makes all user interfaces look alike and thus diminishing the potential to articulate a user experience.

New Way of Vocal Interface Design: Formal Description of Non-verbal Vocal Gestures

  • Pracoviště: Katedra počítačové grafiky a interakce
  • Anotace:
In this paper we introduce a novel approach to formal description of non-verbal vocal gestures and implementation of a general recognition system according to the formal description. It was successfully applied to existing non-verbal vocal applications such as mouse emulation by humming or Tetris. Non-verbal vocal interaction (NVVI) is a proven assistive technology and our system accelerates the process of building the NVVI applications. The system is targeted to both designers and users with disabilities who use the recognition system incorporated in an assistive application. Among others, the formal description is capable of providing continuous control of user interface elements and solving inaccuracy in the pronunciation of vocal gestures.

In this paper we present a novel approach to writing music on handheld pen-based devices which has been developed during the implementation of MusicMan, our pen-based music score editor. A new alphabet of music symbols has been designed especially for use on devices with small screens by musicians skilled in writing the music by hand. Our alphabet is based on simplification of the common Western music notation symbols, making them easier to write on PDA while retaining their overall feel. A user study described in this paper revealed that the alphabet is significantly faster, easier-to-use and more accepted by the firsttime users of PDA than the state-of-art method for pen-based writing of music.

Access to increasing number of web applications is very good news especially for disabled people. These applications become richer and offer wide variety of services used in everyday's life (document creation, instant messaging, data storage, email communication, social networking, etc.). The problem is that at the same time these rich internet applications (RIA) become less accessible. There is a Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) 2 related to W3C 1 which is trying to cope with this problem. In particular the Accessible Rich Internet Application suite of W3C (WAI-ARIA) 3 is describing how to improve the accessibility of dynamic web content and advanced user interface controls in rich internet applications.

Combination of models and logs for visual analysis of data from usability evaluation

  • Pracoviště: Katedra počítačové grafiky a interakce
  • Anotace:
In this paper we present a new visualization method for analysis of the usability test data provided in a log file form. In contrast to the traditional approach, our method uses also the data from the application task and dialog models to give the usability expert detailed log file visualizations with alternative paths. We show the use of the new approach on the example of voice applications, where it appears to be especially suitable. In addition, we describe architecture of a work-in-progress analytical tool that supports such dialog and task based visualizations. As the task models foster deeper understanding of usability data, we believe this approach makes it much easier for developers and for usability experts to communicate over the usability issues.

Ambient intelligence is a rapidly developing field producing a new generation of applications and services demanding new, more complex strategies for usability testing and evaluation. In this paper, we identify caveats of traditional methods of application usability testing when applied to an ambient intelligent environment and we introduce a method for unified analysis of user behavior using a virtual environment visualization. For the usability testing in ambient environments, we propose to transform data (both data recorded in real settings and data artificially created by experts) into a virtual environment to cope with the following issues: a) overwhelming amount of data, b) proprietary data formats, and c) ethical codices issues. We describe a tool for creation of expert evaluation data and for transformation of data from video recordings and illustrate its use on two cases.

Embodied conversational agents are fast growing area of research interest. These agents allow interacting with computers in a natural way. The usage of agents is closely associated with the problem of facial animation. Realistic real-time facial animation is very computational expensive. This work is dedicated to the problem of deformation visualization of pseudo-muscles and head model mesh during the speech using the extended Waters pseudo-muscle head model for animation. These visualizations help us to find out a new way of dynamic level of detail. By reducing activity of particular groups of muscles we can achieve better animation speeds. Running the experiments based on three scenarios proved that these speed-ups are noticeable.

The paper describes an experimental presentation system that can automatically generate dynamic ECA-based presentations from structured data including text context, images, music and sounds, videos, etc. Since an ECA represents a rich channel for conveying both verbal and non-verbal messages, we are researching ECAs as facilitators that transpose "dry" data such as diaries and blogs into more lively and dynamic presentations based on ontologies. We constructed our framework on an existing toolkit ECAF that supports runtime generation of ECA agents. We describe the extensions of the toolkit and give an overview of the current system architecture. We describe the particular Grandma TV scenario, where a family uses the ECA automatic presentation engine to deliver weekly family news to distant grandparents. Recently conducted usability studies suggest the pros and cons of the presented approach.

Increasing participation of the community of computer users with special needs in computer entertainment brings about the need for understanding the benefits and drawbacks of different assistive input techniques and devices that can be used for controlling the entertainment experience. Especially challenging is the support of the control of the arcade games, such as Tetris [7] or Breakout [2], where while only a limited number of game commands is required, the users must issue these in a rapid response to the evolving gameplay - and many assistive devices are unable to cope with this problem. A promising set of techniques is provided by employing the voice as an input device.

A longitudinal study of two non-speech continuous cursor control systems is presented in this paper: Whistling User Interface (U3I) and Vocal Joystick (VJ). This study combines the quantitative and qualitative methods to get a better understanding of novice users' experience over time. Three hypotheses were tested in this study. The quantitative data show that U3I performed better in error rate and in simulating a mouse click; VJ was better on other measures. The qualitative data indicate that the participants' opinions regarding both tools improved day-by-day. U3I was perceived as less fatiguing than VJ. U3I approached the performance of VJ at the end of the study period, indicating that these two systems can achieve similar performances as users get more experienced in using them. This study supports two hypotheses but does not provide enough evidence to support one hypothesis.

Personalized E-learning in Interactive Digital Television Environment

  • Pracoviště: Katedra počítačů
  • Anotace:
The paper deals with the problems of personalization of e-learning in the interactive digital television environment. The main problem discussed is the personalization of additional content synchronized with broadcasted AV stream. The broadcasted AV stream is fully controlled by the broadcaster and the user has no chance to influence it. The majority of existing concepts performs personalization above the course level (the content of the course is not personalized) or they are suitable for asynchronous content only (e.g. video on demand). In this paper a solution for personalization of the additional content synchronized with the AV stream is proposed. We are focusing on a standardized solution based on the SCORM standard.

Evaluation of user interface design is usually based on usability testing methods. In this paper we analyzed and described the user behavior in the form of the user model. The user model is built on a data set which was acquired through observation of user behavior. The criterion we use for the evaluation of the usability of interface design is the user cognitive load. We present different tools for visualization, simulation and easier analysis of the user model. Because each of the methods and tools presented use only part of the user model, in the end we present methods on how to use the complete user model to correctly describe user behavior. In order to understand such a complex model we need to have a proper visualization tool. The concept of such a visualization tool is presented at the end of this paper.

Models of real world systems are being increasingly generated from data that describes the behaviour of systems. Data mining techniques, such as Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), generate models almost independently and deliver accurate models in a very short time. These models have complex internal structures that are difficult to interpret and we have very limited information about the credibility of their output. In this paper, we present visualization techniques based on sensitivity analysis aimed to discover relationships between variables and to recognize regions where the output is credible and where it is not. We have developed visualization techniques both for regression and classification problems. Finally, we present an algorithm that is able to automatically locate the most interesting visualizations in the vast multidimensional space of input variables.

This paper describes the design and implementation of a system for controlling mouse pointer using non-verbal sounds such as whistling and humming. Two control modes have been implemented-an orthogonal mode (where the pointer moves with variable speed either horizontally or vertically at any one time) and a melodic mode (where the pointer moves with fixed speed in any direction). A preliminary user study with four users indicates that the orthogonal control was easier to operate and that the humming was less tiring for the users than whistling. The developed system may contribute as an inexpensive, alternative pointing device for people with motor disabilities.

There are many situations in which listening to a text produced by a text-to-speech system is easier or safer than reading, for example when driving a car. Technical documents, such as conference articles, manuals etc., usually are comprised of relatively plain and unequivocal sentences. These documents usually contain words and terms unknown to the listener because they are full of domain specific terminology. In this paper, we propose a system that allows the users to interrupt the reading upon hearing an unknown or confusing term by a non-speech acoustic gesture (e.g. "uhm?"). Upon this interruption, the system provides a definition of the term, retrieved from Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia. The selection of the non-speech gestures has been made with a respect to the cross-cultural applicability and language independence. In this paper we present a set of novel tools enabling this kind of interaction.

Jabber Based Protocol for Collaborative Mobile Work

  • Pracoviště: Katedra počítačů

In this paper we introduce an application level protocol for sharing of XML based data. This protocol is especially designed for mobile environment. It is able to deal with unreliability of the mobile wireless networks where the client´s bandwith is limited and the connection may frequently fail. We describe the synchronization process of the data from the client side as well as from the server side. The protocol can deal with data synchronization conflicts and can prevent them in most cases by using data locking mechnism. Data buffering mechanism from client and server side is supporting the reestablishing of data consistency after connection failure. The protocol has been verified by means of scenario from a facility management domain.

This paper reports a comparison of user performance (time and accuracy) when controlling a popular arcade game of Tetris using speech recognition or non-speech (humming) input techniques. The preliminary qualitative study with seven participants shows that users were able to control the game using both methods but required more training and feedback for the humming control. The revised interface, which implemented these requirements, was positively responded by users. The quantitative test with 12 other participants shows that humming excelled in both time and accuracy, especially over longer distances and advanced difficulty levels.

This paper outlines a novel interaction technique allowing the visually impaired users to examine the layout of complex paper documents (e.g. a newspaper page). The document is placed on a desk in the view of a camera placed above it. The tip of user's index finger is tracked by means of algorithms of computer vision. As the user moves the finger over the document, the layout of its logical units (articles) is revealed by means of a simple sonification of their boundaries and the speech synthesis. In the paper, implementation of the test application is described and evaluated. The main advantage of our system is the direct mapping of the kinaesthetic experience to the layout of the physical document, enabling the user to employ any strategy to traverse the document. The prototype has been mplemented using the ARToolKit library.

This paper describes the advances of our research on visualization of multi-agent systems (MAS) for purposes of analysis, monitoring and debugging. MAS are getting more complex and widely used, such analysis tools are highly beneficial in order to achieve better understanding of agent behaviour. Our solution is based on our originally offline visualization tools suite, which now uses a new realtime data acquisition framework. In this case we have focused on agent meta-reasoning in a MAS for planning of humanitarian relief operations. Previous tools were unable to deal with complex characteristics of these simulations, thus we have made some progress to present maximum of important information for realtime monitoring. This paper describes this progress, declares conditions and proposes visualization methods.

Utilization of non-photorealistic techniques (NPR) is beneficial in many cases, in comparison with the use of traditional rendering methods in computer graphics. The observer's sensation is often straighter, clearer, or even more valuable. There exists plenty of various NPR techniques in computer graphics, however application of one technique to the specific problem is not necessarily as providential as usage of another one. There arises a strong need to classify NPR techniques with respect to their applicability, to find a mechanism able to compare NPR techniques automatically. The search for such a mechanism will be a long term goal. We present our first steps towards the solution to this problem - the comparison of 2D-based NPR techniques using Daly's Visible Differences Predictor (VDP). Results from our experiments are reported and will be used to improve communication in graphical user interfaces.

Although there are many voice systems that can act as user interfaces for visually impaired people, there is still a problem with explaining more complicated structures to these users (such as mathematical equations, logical proofs, chemical formulas etc.) through speech. The output of such an interface is then reduced to a text reader. The problem is that we have lost (graphic) information about the structure, which is 2-dimensional. Within this paper we will describe a solution to this problem. We will concentrate on the structure of expressions and on reading logical proofs. We will present a preliminary design for a new markup language to describe the structure of logical proof and a method of how to present it to users by using speech efficiently.

Semantic Driven Visualization

Semantic information visualization

  • Pracoviště: Katedra počítačů
  • Anotace:
We have designed and implemented a graphical tool for visualization and manipulation with semantic metadata for the use of data adaptation in the mobile environment. The tool is capable of visualizing of both the 3D (2D) data and the semantic graphs. The semantics and geometrical information are interconnected so the manipulation with one is immediately propagated to the other. The interactivity and appropriate visualization greatly help the user to create or modify complex semantic descriptions.

  • Anotace:
The extension of our research on analysis of a single agent or agent communities combining advanced methods of visualization with traditional AI techniques is presented in this paper. Even though this approach can be used for arbitrary Multi-Agent System (MAS), it was primarily developed to analyze systems falling into Artificial Life domain. Traditional methods are becoming insufficient as Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) are becoming more complex and therefore novel approaches are needed. In this paper we present an extension of our recent visualization tools suite. The previous approach was not suitable well to present the dynamics of the MAS, even though the progression of MAS state parameters in time was presented. Our new technique, which is presented in this paper, addresses this problem by visualizing the changes of the MAS along with their quality and context. This transparent approach emphasizes MAS dynamics by providing means for discovery of changes in its tendencies or in behavi

One such example might be the use of 3D information in the web environment (and navigation in such an environment) by visually impaired users. Our solution provides semantic and functional description of the scene objects and inter-object relations in addition to "standard" geometric scene description. This approach permits the user to query for various information in the virtual environment (e.g. searching for a path to a specific object, searching for an object with specific properties and particularly filtering scene information). The system should allow the visually impaired user to virtually walk through the scene and query for information about the objects in a scene. The user interface itself provides the feedback in accordance with the user's group's specific requirements (screen reader, Braille display etc.).

We present a new method for computing visibility from a polygonal region in the plane considering a set of line segments as occluders. The proposed method provides a comprehensive description of visibility from the given region. We represent sets of occluded rays using a hierarchical partitioning of dual space (line space). The line space partitioning is maintained by a BSP tree that provides efficient operations on the sets of lines. The implementation shows that the method is suitable for computing potentially visible sets in large scenes with various visibility characteristics.

We analyze new approaches that increase the quality of HCC in the environment of disabled users or user utilizing mobile devices. In both cases the problem of adaptation of the interactive system (which communicates with the user) to dynamically and very strongly changing context of use (end-device features, environment, user tasks, user capabilities, etc.) are addressed. We have analyzed existing solutions. The insufficiency of these solutions in the field of adaptation of system data (the data manipulated by the user using the user interface of an interactive system) was identified.

We propose a method for creating 'smart' sketches of freeform 3D objects. A 2D sketch of an object drawn by the user is enriched with information about its 3D structure. With the help of our system, the user can rotate the created sketch of the object and view it from various angles. Since most of the user input is a traditional 2D sketch, the system is very easy to use and doesn't limit the user's creativity. Our approach closely simulates the way 3D objects are drawn by artists. The user first models by sketching a simple 3D skeleton of the desired object. A more detailed sketch of the object is drawn in 2D over the skeleton. The skeleton helps the user to maintain correct proportions while drawing. Using the 3D skeleton, the system helps the user rotate the sketch. This way a hybrid model of an object is created - although being essentially 2D, the model can be rotated smoothly and viewed from various angle

We compared features between classical approach of storing data sets and saving the output of visualization to common movie files formats. Furthermore, we have performed measurements of overall acceleration and disk space requirements. The disk space requirements are in orders less demanding than the ones needed for saving corresponding data sets. This allows better scalability and storing and replaying results of complex tasks with large grids and/or ten thousands ofparticles.

In this paper, we introduce such techniques based on the data hierarchy (levels of detail). Namely, we describe focus-and-context visualisation and progressive transmission. The main aim of this paper is to discuss the combination of these techniques for different data types and for mixture of these data types.

The paper deals with formal description of data transformation (compression and decompression process). An adaptive compression tool for different data types (both raster and vector), that is based on finite automata, is introduced. When using distributed geographic information system (GIS), data of different types has to be transmitted. The introduced tool enables flexible changes of compression method and selective loss control during compression process. Finite automata are discussed for several dictionary and other string-based compression methods. Application of one dimensional compression methods in the field of computer graphics is discussed.

  • Pracoviště: Katedra počítačů
  • Anotace:
Increasing complexity of queries on the one side and UI limitations of new technologies (e.g. handheld devices) on other enforce new flexible and dynamic querying methods development. Experimental system for testing UI for efficient querying in picture DBS was built. New approach applied. This approach, based on a richer (than MPEG-7) picture description defined in XML allows more efficient querying.

Structural and Semantic Dialogue Filters

  • Pracoviště: Katedra počítačů
  • Anotace:
The problem of the access of blind people to the graphical information (in a form of picture) is discussed. It is necessary to reduce amount of complex information of the picture to keep understandability of the picture description for blind user. This is solved by special seman- tic and structural dialog filters, which filter required information. The research has been conducted in the framework of several projects. The result of this research is an implementation of tools for creating and bro- wsing the picture description. Because of the similarity between picture description and hypertext document description the filtering methods developed could be also used on any hypertext document, which follows our document structure [3] definition made in XML [6]. The method de- veloped allows the user to transform two-dimensional information into textual one. In such a way complex manipulations can be performed in textual form.

  • Pracoviště: Katedra počítačů
  • Anotace:
In this paper new techniques for the visualization of genetic algorithms (GAs) are presented. These techniques enable us to visualize whole the GA, not only solution development as other techniques do. A software package in Java for using and visualizing GAs was written and used to write applets visualizing the working of GAs. Some of these applets were used to form a learning environment for genetic algorithms.
